Hi All,
I quite fancy getting an MX5 especially with summer approaching, any ideas on the engine/general durability of these cars? Is high mileage an issue? I'd be looking at a 2000 model or earlier.
Thanks Ian.

Every MX5 ive seen at auction has 100,000 miles + i would be more concerned with condition and service history, a hpi check is also a must on one of these.

A friend still has one of the first ones, with pop-up headlights. I believe he has never had anything serious go wrong with it.

There was a recent review of the MX5 in one of the glossy/classic car mags I happened to flick through in an airport bookstall, you might be able to find it. They have a bulletproof reputation, and are capable of very high mileages but dependant on care and attention of course. Prices start from around 2/2.5k even for the oldest of cars. Check the condition of the hood - expensive to replace - and the rear plastic screen, if not one of the glass ones, as these should be zipped out when folding the roof but often arent and suffer accordingly. If it has a hard top that is worth an extra £500 at least. The radiator has quite small bores apparently so regular fluid, not tap water, changes are advisable. My wife has a 1991 Eunos import and in two years nothing has gone wrong with it, apart from the need for a new battery. great car to drive, not fast but fun. The back end can break away and this is sometimes the cause of some grief so check for accident damage. There are lots of special editions and variants as well which can be confusing. Plenty of aftermarket and patter parts available from specialist dealers, a google search will soon reveal them. Great cars, if you buy sensibly you cant really go wrong.
