Mk2 golf 1.3 1990-high idle - Sarb11

My car above has for the past few weeks on starting up idled fast then when i give it a rev returned to normal idle speed. I thought it was the throttel cable sticking on start up. Anyway I thought nothing of it until now!

Driving back from work after 3 miles the idle revs just became higher than normal, that it it was in danger of overheating. I have had a look under the bonnet and tried adjusting the idle screw but this has no effect in either direction it just turns and turns (am i doing it correct?)

Anyone got any ideas on the prob and how to fix it please?

Managed to adjust the idle speed correctly am going on a test drive to see what happens!

It was cutting out after it had warmed up, so now I have adjusted it and it seems to be working fine. Am puzzled as to why it went high in the first place out of nothing?

probably the valve in the carb housing or something got bunged up, if you clean it all in carb cleaner (not running, lol) it might make it a little better. just a thought.
