When a cambelt goes - mss1tw
What's it like to be driving? Is the noise absoutely deafening? Does smoke pour out from under the bonnet? Etc...

I was pondering this on the way home; the thoughts of pieces of engine coming into contact at 70mph aren't nice.

I had the great dipleasure of being in our Mercedes hearse when the timing chain went about five years ago (fortunately not on a funeral). I put my foot in to kickdown the 'box at the bottom of a hill, there was a high pitched screech, I could feel everything get tight through the ball of my foot, then it all went quiet as i very quickly lost momentum and came to a halt. IIRC the final bill was about £2,500.

Rubber band went in my Citroen BX TD at 39,000 miles. No noise, no drama - the engine just stopped. Prior to that I had heard a very faint 'sticky' 'slap slap slap' noise but (Doh!) had no idea what it was, and it was difficult to hear anything over the London Taxi engine noise.

Went, or rather jumped, in my Xantia HDI 110.

Stopped normally at give way. Depressed accelerator to move away and was met by loud knocking. Dumped car on verge and called Breakdown Service. Damage to valves and rockers.

taking 1600 escort to block on the motorway doing just over 70 mph realised this and dropped the speed to 6o and the belt went ,no drama no noise just no drive ,dropped the clutch and coasted it thankfully up the slip road via hard shoulder to "a" road and went to telephone box to phone a friend,my brick telephone battery had gone flat.
Have had lots of cars that have given the death rattle on the motorway as the big ends have gone and they do give you warning but you know its too late by then,(moral here check your oil often and dont thrash a tired motor)

When a cambelt goes - BB
I had a cambelt go in the outside lane M1 J23a Southbound. Travelling at 70mph+, no noise/bang but I had a complete loss of power, the engine cut out and I had to pull over 3 lanes of traffic and a slip road to get to the hard shoulder. Nearly got killed. Never drove the car again (VW Passat 1.9tdi 110bhp)
