Clio 1.2 - Knock Sensor / Optimax - Keith S
Hi everyone,

Was just wondering if a new Clio 1.2 16v engine (not the latest shape Clio - the outgoing model) has a knock sensor on the engine that would make optimax worth having?

you are wasting your money putting optimax in a 1.2 clio.

It has a knock sensor yes but 95RON won't have any problem you won't loose any power.>> you are wasting your money putting optimax in a 1.2 clio.

Some cars use the knock sensor to simply retard the ignition to avoid pinking. On these a higher octane of fuel than recommended is of no benefit.

Other systems can select different ECU maps to adjust for different fuel grades. It's only on these that 98 octane fuel gives any benefit.

Thanks for the replies gents,

The little sticker on the fuel filler flap says 95 or 98 ron. (The handbook states that you must look there for the required fuel grades.)

Surely it would only say 95 ron if 98 was a waste of time?

Anyone know how the sensor on this particular engine works?

i.e. as mentioned just to retard if detonation occurs or if it will also advance the timing if of benefit?

Knock sensor only retards ignition if incorrect fuel is put in,ie its a microphone to tell ecu its knocking/pinking,timing is then retarded to prevent this happening..ecu controls timing as stated 95/98 ron ecu should cope with both, without any probs

The knock sensor constantly allows the engine management system to run the ignition timing to maximum possible advance all the time for optimum performance, economy and, of course, minimum emissions.
Youll notice the advantage of optimax pretty well on anything you put it into as being a quality fuel carries other benefits as well such as its cleaning properties. Its a bit like the difference between Lidl and Kelloggs Cornflakes, Both have Cornflakes in the box........

Thanks Andrew - so it sounds like any engine management system with a knock sensor will be able to get the full benefit from whatever fuel is used.

We used to run a 1.4 206 and a 1.4 Xsara. Both ran smoother on Optimax. Don't forget Optimax's improved cleaning properties!
