1996 Polo - Air Bag - Scampy
Airbag light has just started to come on and stay on. Does this mean I need a new airbag or is there also an electronic unit/sensor that may need checking?

needs pluging into diagnostic machine idealy or you can check all the sensors for poor conections if you can find them all

Don't mess with airbags there is a lot of danger of it going off in your face if you don't know what your doing!!!!
It is probably the clock spring (wire type link behind the steering wheel)
They crack through time the part is between £50-£80 takes a skilled tech about 1 hour to fix but needs checking on either vagcom or vag 1551 at a specialist or dealer

Had this issue briefly on my car - someone sat in the back had disturbed the connectors under the front seat - quick fiddle with connectors and has been fine since. worth a try if you havent already - cheaper than paying someone to do it!!

Hi,

Don't think this will work in a polo. The seat belt tensioners are built in to the seatbelt reel rather than the seatbelt buckle and I beleive work on (Manual shock sensing) rather than being connected to a electronic controll unit like a lot of other cars. Don't think you will find wires under the seat but may be wrong?

My Wife used to have a Xsara and these had seatbelt tensioners on the Seatbelt stalk and had wires under the seat which would give an airbag fault if knocked.

I think for the polo though it will need to be plugged in to a diagnostics to be sorted.

Kind Regards

Jlo

IF your Polo has seat belt tensioners they WILL be connected to the ecu. the pretensioner may be at the buckle or on the reel. If they are the reel type the wiring can be checked, but it may be more difficult to get at being behind the B post trim.

With the key OUT of the ignition check as many of the wiring connections as you can, including those at the ecu. You'll need to remove the airbag and steering wheel to check the rotary coupler properly. If you've got the airbag removed, check the resistance across the firing terminals - it should be about 1 to 2 ohms.

i wouldnt give this advice if you dont mind, i would advise to a novise take it either to vw or a good indi, i certainly wouldnt advise him to start measuring resistances on something he may not understand,or someone else reading this with a basic understanding of airbags.

sorry.

Thanks for all your advise. I've booked it in to the local garage to get the codes read and see how I go on from there. I will post the findings

Had codes read today and light has gone out. Fault was due to high voltage(!)

Am I correct in that the Air Bag light also come on if faults are detected by ECU? There does not appear to be any ECU warning light on instrument display

what did they say about the high voltage?is it a faulty generator?

Did'nt say, all I wanted was the light out and hope it doesn't come on again!
