Peugeot 406 speedo - rickylee
Hi, long time browser first time poster.
The story is I replaced the speed sensor on the gearbox in March because of an intermittent problem, this fixed it no prob but yesterday it died again. This time it doesn't seem intermittent its ust not working, I checked the connections behind the cluster and their fine.
So I guess I want to make sure its the cluster or should I try taking the speed sensor back to pug and see if they'll replace it?
I'm just hoping its not a torn wire somewhere...
Thanks in advance guys!

Is there anyone who can help?

Put the one you took out back in and see if it becomes an intermittent fault once again;this will tell you if it's the sensor.

On many 406's there's a speedo driver module mounted in the supplementary ECU racks behind the glovebox. Usually black, extreme right, front row. D8's had it and some later D9's. Worth a look.

Remove the sensor from the gearbox & rotate the drive part by hand or use a drill. If the speedo needle moves then it may be a mechanical fault in the gearbox final drive .(not an unknown fault on 406 models)

Ok cheers guys, i'll play about with the sensor - hopefully its just the sensor itself, dont want to have to mess with the wires.
Thanks again.

There is an "interface" ( a small box of electrical gubins) under the dashboard behind the glovebox, as Screwloose says. I am not sure if this only appertains to the 2.1 td, and I'm not sure if a dead speedo fully fits the symptoms that this box causes when it fails.
In my case when it failed, the speedo would work on an occasional basis, then drop to "0" then flick back up to the speed the car was at, sometimes remaining at "0".
They are about £40, and you have to be quite agile to fit it.
Give your local friendly Pug spares dept a ring and see if they can advise.

Probably reffered to as a "speedo interface".
