I wonder if anyone could tell me what would cause the trip computer on the dashboard to reset itself randomly when starting the engine?

When it resets it makes a whirring sound and the distance travelled is reset along with the mpg & miles remaining in the tank figure.

This doesnt happen everytime i start it up, just occasionally.

The car is a 2000 X RSi 1.6 16v 75k on the clock

I checked the relay box above the NSF wheel and there is no sign of water ingress or corrosion

Sounds like a voltage related problem. Maybe the battery is showing early signs of failure. Most fast fit places should be able to do a free test on it for you.
