Very nearly a Selby2 today - gwyn parry
An accident was reported on the Welsh news today about a HGV that piled into a
broken down Army Land Rover (!). The Landie was so much scrap iron on the hard shoulder -squaddies had, sensibly, evacuated when it broke down otherwise they would have been mincemeat. The lorry then took off over, an apparantly, unprotected emabankment onto a main -line railway narrowly missing an express train and goods train. Another freaky accident ?

I understand that this type of accident, along with vehcles trying to "jump" level crossing barriers, is on the increase.

Back in August a bread van ended up on the West Coast Main Line at Bletchley after "swerving to avoid a fox". Honest.

Without wanting to provoke another "Gary Hart is Innocent Campaign" thread, I can confirm that the standards of fencing (sufficient to stop a vehicle) around railway lines have not declined in in recent years.

So what's changed? Driving standards?
