Mondeo fuel pump prob. - ukjohnny

Mondeo 97 1.8 Turbo Diesel estate.

My sons Taxi mondeo, has been recently over reving. took it to ford main dealer, who said it was due to the fuel pump. need new one....cost 1300 pounds!
He found a second hand one off a friend, garage said it was ok, and compatible, but on fitting, will not start, and has been told they couldnt configre it with electrics, and will still need a new one. Do you think this is right? and the cost?

If by over revving you mean revving up beyond the normal rev limiter even when your foot isn't on the accelerator, which can be stopped by switching off, then it is possible that there is a fault with the govenor.

I don't know the type of injector pump fitted to your car, but if it is like the Bosch rotary type, then it is possible that the drive to the govenor has failed. Some were fitted with a rubber cushion drive that can fail - scattering particles of rubber all over the pump. The govenor stops whirling, so the car revs its head off. It may be worth your while finding a diesel specialist who can overhaul pumps.

If on the other hand, switching off doesn't stop the car, i.e., you have to stall it, it may be burning the oil via compression ignition.

Yes, ive been informed that the engine will stop on ignition key.
Ford garage now says that even after putting a new pump in, they cannot be sure it will work. Says all mondeo pumps are different, with different code numbers, that has to tie up with there laptops??? They even charged £200 for installing the second hand one, THEY said would work! and now require another £1600 for the new one!

Is a 97 Mondeo Estate even worth £1600, especially with taxi mileage on it?

A reputable diesel specialist will be able to supply and fit a properly reconditioned diesel pump with a warranty for well under £500 on a Mondeo.
