There were three models of Passat - S, SE and Sport at this age with this mileage.

A Sport is not an SE and as far as I'm aware, there was no recognised sports pack on it.

He probably means it has alloy wheels, possibly sports seats and if you're really lucky, modified dampers for a sporty setup. However if he can't tell you what it includes it sounds like the major component in the pack is hot air.

Isn't this the 125bhp engine? Can't see that going very far in a Passat. Still, worth a shot if you can get it for about 3k I suppose.

Just picked up on this one after a week away.

The single biggest issue with this engine is the cam belt. VW recommend replacement at 80k, but it's known to fail before this mileage is reached. I had mine done at 75k on the recommendation of an independent specialist who had seen the results of a failure - pretty catastrophic with the five valve head.

Head gaskets can fail, and the five valve head means a dealer will quote a higher than average price for replacement.

Check that the Climatronic works properly, that the gear lever gaiter isn't about to wear through

It's a lusty engine but economy is below par. It's okay if you give it a diet of motorways (36-38mpg), but with a life of town driving it can fall below 30 - no joke these days. This is the reason I swapped for a TDi in the end.

You're looking at a roomy, pretty solid car that steers nicely and does most things well. But don't service it at a dealer - their prices are over the top and I'm afraid the service just isn't there these days. I found a good independent and he is streets ahead.

Re the Sports pack - could it be an import from Europe? (not that this is a problem)

I ordered and bought a VW from Dublin in Sept 2000 and their models/specs were different and included a sports pack on several models. It took a little bit of homework to ensure mine(a Golf GTI 1.8t)was to full UK spec.
