Buying a Rover now? - robZilla
Looking round my local Saab dealer yesterday evening, I noticed the had a Rover 75, presumably taken as part-ex on a new Saab. Out of curiosity, I had a look round it. 03 plate (June 03, so two years old), 16k miles, 2.5 V6, very good nick - £7,995. A good deal I thought.

I am now semi-seriously considering buying one (not that one, I'd want an estate) but what's the catch? I'm assuming there soon won't be any Rover dealers around, but not a problem as I wouldn't get it serviced at one anyway, I'd find a good independent specialist. What about spares? Are they likely to be available for many years yet? Anything else I haven't thought of? Am I being ridiculous?

Spares availability will be your biggest problem.

£8k for a 2year old one when new is £10k...

Economic madness.

as for spares, have a minor smash and spares unobtainable - especially for low volume cars.. an estate for example..

Also look at HJs auction reports over the last few weeks and compare the Rover auction prices with current Parkers/CAP/Glass prices to make your own mind up acout the slide of Rover prices....

you couldnt get new alloys for a 75 about a year ago, never mind now that theyve gone bust, friend had to pull strings with a friend at the factory after he pranged one of his wheels

Very high risk I think, only one worth considering would be MGTF - someone is more than likely to continue it. Rovers were never known for their reliability so its certain at some point you'll need spare parts & that's not including possible accident damage etc. If it was my money wouldn't take the chance.

Idle forum talk - not true, try and actually buy a brand new 75 for £10k...

I would imagine that the cost of insurance will rise soon as well. If the parts are not avaliable then the cars will be written off, if this starts to happen too early then they will hike their prices (they don't need much of an excuse!!).

Mechanical spares shouldn't be a problem. They're made by Quinton Hazel, Lucas (etc) and you can buy them over the counter at Halfords.

Body parts (wings in case of an accident, etc) might be a problem in the future.

I've driven Rovers for the last 10 years and I'd buy another one, if it was cheap enough.
