My father-in-law has the Diesel version and it has been perfectly reliable bar one small electrical problem easily fixed.

I've got a 1998 93 SE Turbo with the 185 bhp engine, has been very reliable but is heavy on fuel (auto). Had some well documented (non breakdown) faults with A/C display, leaky shocks and thats it after 90k miles. I give the car a tough life loading it up and am a fairly hard driver (hence low mpg), very good seats give my bad back no aches, it sailed at average 80-90 mph from my home in Barcelona to Cherbourg (14 hour run) a couple of months ago.

I'm quite attached to the 'old bus'which I picked up at a UK auction 4 years ago, struggling to think of a suitable replacement now I need a LHD.

One other point find a proper SAAB specialist for servicing or to check it over, the main dealers I previously used have been absolute money grabbing bandits and not as knowledgable on minor (cheap fax) faults, I think they have helped SAAB's get a rep for being money pits.

good luck

I bought an 95,000 mile R reg (1998) in 2002, the TiD version. I reckon it's a good, solid comfortable car (fabulous seats, quiet cruiser), with more than enough power. I have spent a fair bit on it - new under floor plate, rear shocks - and routine servicing isn't the cheapest. However, it isn't a Ford or Vauxhall, and you do seem to pay for a bit of prestige whichever way.
For £8,500 and years of life yet, I reckon it's a good secong hand deal.
