rev counter not working - Fiesta mk4 - zeteclx
can anyone shed anylight on this my rev counter in my mk4 (1998)fiesta does not work. If the weather is quite cold it does work also when i turn the ignition the airbag check light comes on then goes out (i presume this is supposed to happen) but again only when cold. As soon as the cabin starts to get warm especially if i put the heater on the rev counter fails. Someone suggestd it must be something contracting due to the cold and therefore making a connection. If so how do i get behind the clocks in the dash and will this mean removing the steering wheel.
thanks in advance for any help.

It sounds like a bad connection of some sort. You might be able to get at the multiplug from below, i.e. the footwell, though it will be fiddly and you'll have to know what you're feeling for.

I presume you're reading a Haynes account of taking the steering wheel off before you begin? While I'm not saying their advise is wrong, I have found on an Escort that you can do the job easily enough without taking the wheel off as Haynes suggests, it just takes more maneuvering to get the cluster out, which may not work for chunky fingers. Also if you take the wheel off you'll no doubt have to remove the airbag as well. In any job where you're leaning on/over the steering wheel the horn can be a nightmare. Take its fuse out before you start so you don't annoy the neighbours: it might be called "Hazard Warning" fuse (hazard triangle picture) which will also knock out the hazard warning lights.
