I noticed last night whilst stationary my 96 1.25 ford fiesta made a strange whistling noise if I pressed the brake pedal lightly. If I then pressed it a little harder the noise stopped. If I then turn the engine off I hear a noise like a balloon going down for maybe 5 or 6 seconds, pressing the brake pedal makes the noise stop sooner. I suspect a damaged vacuum hose, is there anything else I should check for.
Many Thanks

The noise is more of a hiss than a whistle if that helps.

Im no brake expert but i would have thought that the whistling could be due to the servo assistance kicking in - as many newer cars have a "kick" in the action so that as soon as you touch the pedal a certain amount of pressure is applied to the brakes. When i used to drive my first car (a nova) and then drive a focus at work i would find myself jerking it upon braking the first 5 mins in it as the servo was so aggressive compared to the nova.
I guess that if there was a leak somewhere the this could be the cause - the servo imparting pressure and drawing air somewhere.

To check if you have a leak in the brake servo system, switch the engine off, press the brake pedal four/five times until you feel it go hard, then, keeping your foot down on the brake, start the engine. You should feel the brake pedal move down as the servo kicks in. If no movement, you need to get the servo mechanism checked.

I checked the brake servo in the manner you described. It works exactly as I expected.

This is a brake/safety issue so great care should be taken when replying to this guy. I would suggest you have a leak in the servo diagphram. Sit in the car just after you have turned the engine off press gently on the brake pedal until you detect resistance and you hear the hiss if the pedal now appears to be falling away from you i.e. your foot continues to go down then you either have a small split in the servo diagpham or the one way servo valve requires replacing. I suggest that is is the diagpham so try this and come back with the results age and mileage of the car. Regards Peter

Thanks for the advice guys. I had a good look/listen last night and the hissing is definitely coming from the servo. Also checked the one way valve, that is working exactly as expected. So it looks like I'm off to Ford to get a new servo, anyone want to guess how much a new servo is for a 96 ford fiesta?
