I have an "unfinished project" taking up space. SWMBO has decided it has to go. What is the score with scrap these days Do Scrappies pay or do I have to pay to scrap. No problem with transporting it - it is already on a trailer and ready to hitch up to the the Landie. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance.

Last car i scrapped was a fiat uno about 18 months ago - scrappie paid me £20 for it. No idea on current scrap price though

Scrap metal price has recently risen again so it is now a good time to weigh in any scrap metal you have lying around. Scrap vehicles though are subject to more and more regulations and you may find that your local scrap metal dealer will no longer accept vehicles. You may have to take it to dedicated vehicle dismantler who has the necessary equipment and licences to deal with scrap vehicles. Even so, if it is a breakers yard then it should be worth something. Ring round a few scrap dealers and car breakers first to obtain the best price you can before you hitch up your trailer and set off with it.

what kind of "project" is it?
|
RF - I was rather hoping no-one would ask !! It is a 1989 320 touring - rather the worse for wear I'm afraid. Still complete and reasonably rust free. It started a couple of years ago....

Is it worth any of your time to stick it on eBay?
It's actually surprising what a car like this can go for. I don't know what the car needs but it's easily £400 if roadworthy and someone else may want it as a project...
Even a scrapyard (is there a specialist BMW breaker near you?) might give you a ton for it, depending on how good/bad it is.

I would agree with David, PU.
Put it on Ebay for a starting price of around £60 or so. Mention that local delivery is an option at £1 per mile.

Mmmm never thought of that.
It needs (at least) a new steering rack. Its been stored (properly) for the last 5 years. For those interested it was my first "proper" company car which I bought for family use later. Done 200k before MoT faliure beckoned.

Owners of clapped out cars will be able to have them removed free of charge by the council fo rthe next two weeks.

E-bay would be a more humane way.
|
An even cheaper way would be on www.boxer.ebid.co.uk .
They don't charge listing or success fees for standard ads with one photo. May not have quite the audience of eBay, but there is still quite a following.
|
This one may be going for a premium because of the wheels, but there must be some underlying value too - and in any case I'd rather have to fix a steering rack than a head gasket failure.

I wonder if I could smuggle that into PU Towers without SWMBO noticing......
|
Hi all.
Depends on the area you live in, but, as of the first of Jan 2005, your car is no longer classed as scrap metal. It is now hazardous waste. This meand diposal in a different way.
The "scrap yard" has to remove recylable parts(plastic, glass, rubber etc) and remove and dispose of all the liquids as these are classed as hazardous too. The vehicle has to be dismantled in an area where spillages can be kept to a minimum and cleaned up. Our local breaker charges £20. Quite resonable considering the work that goes into "scrapping" a car nowadays.
There is a move to get the manufacturers to fund the recycling of vehicles in the future.
A lot of scrap yards no longer accept cars because of the extra work and paperwork that goes into it now.

Phoned a large local dismantlers today on spec. Described the motor to them, said "probably a hundred notes".........E-bay or Scrap the dilema continues.
Beans Means Cash.

Hi PU Towers
Described the motor to them, said "probably a hundred notes"
They pay you I assume - Seriously, a question worth asking.
Even so, when they turn up the expected £100 will be - ahem revised to a lower figure on the basis that they already have several of that type in there yard and everyone want's the 323i engine of that ilk and this will just sit there for months etc etc.... you get the drift.
If so, why not put it on E bay for the full 10 days for £105 initial bid?
