under load (generally in first gear) the engine misses slightly local VW garage has said it is a worn distributor (60000 miles?)and quoted £160 to replace. Any ideas?

very unlikely to be a worn distributor;more likely to be HT leads,which are certainly a lot cheaper.

think I had same problem with my 1400 1998 polo. all my leads went rigid, whereas they are supposed to be really 'bendy', changing all 5 stopped the problem. I agree 'elekie&a/c doctor' :)
