Vauxhall Monterey ABS Fault Codes - rg
Hello Folks,

I suspect that it's a "yes", but does the ABS ECU store the codes? I have an intermittant sensor fault.

My Vx franchise thought that the fault might need to be present when the ECU is read.

Does anyone know of a gadget that reads them? I suspect that it's "Isuzu Only".

And does anyone know of a decent independent Isuzu specialist in the North East?

rg,

Not sure if this is of any help or not.

Great Site, thanks, Dave!

The next stage is to "catch" the system misbehaving...

Hi,
my Vauxhall omega ecu does store codes. just used it to fault find recently and successfully. Just needed a paperclip in the diagnostic plug on the right pins and a knowledge of the codes. All available on the web. Of course your vauxhall may be different! If it has stored one it will be recent as they auto cancel after 25 starts I believe.

Most intermittent ABS faults are due to fractured cables to the front wheel sensors due to suspension & steering movement.
If you connect an ohm meter to each connector looking at the sensor you should get a reading of about 1000 ohms give or take 200. You can then jiggle the ABS sensor cable where the cable bends most at the steering knuckle & if dodgy will show as a fluctuating reading on the meter.

Hello Folks!

The ABS Light on my Vauxhall Monterey (Isuzu Trooper) comes on intermittently, usally after a turn has been made. Full left lock (followed by recycling) often cures it.

There is a useful guide (kindly advised by Dynamic Dave IIRC) to DIY ABS testing at

www.topbuzz1.carenthusiasts.co.uk/

Taking a meter to each sensor today revealed the following values in ohms on the "2000" scale:

Nearside:

stationary: 1024

rolling 985-1052

Offside:

stationary: 1059

rolling: 940-1221

I'm ashamed to say that my physics theory is not that good! I take it that these figures point to a partial failure of the nearside sensor, by the fact of it's lower resistance?

Can anyone confirm this?

Just for the record, I rolled the wheels by hand. If this method works, I will have saved the £30.00+ at the main dealer for a 10 minute diagnostic check, and I will be most pleased!

Cheers

Are the tyres on each wheel in a comparable condition? If you have one new, or one v. worn tyre, it can confuse the system a bit.

Finding a local garage with a code reader and a crisp £20 note will ensure you get the right sensor, first time round......

Thanks, folks,

The tyre are fine. I think that this is a deteriorating cable issue.

DL - The Isuzu dealer 15 miles away wants £35.00. The local Vauxhall delaer wants less , but seems less compentant.

Hence, out with the meter. I hate getting ripped off by main dealers if I can do the job myself.

But any independant workshop (with the right kit) can diagnose this system quite easily I'd have thought....

I'd prefer concrete evidence before embarking on sensor replacement, but that's just me!

...yes, me too. However, I understand that the Isuzu interface/protocol is non-standard. (Unless anyone else knows otherwise)

There arn't that many indies doing Isuzu (and knowing what they're doing).

Hence the meter. Hence the question.

Hmmmmm indeed that might be the case.

I'll check on our Sykes code reader tommorrow - we have a multi-application module for it.

Sometimes I wonder if I am paranoid and unfair in respect of main dealers.

But then, I think that I'm justifiably wary.

So, I call up my local place and they say "yes, we can read the codes while you wait. Dead easy." I query if they are sure that they have the right diagnostic tools, and I'm met with a faint "who do you think we are" response.

So, it goes down to them. I wait around for almost an hour. I query the wait. "Oh, he's having a few problems." An hour and forty five minutes of my precious self-employed time later, I'm told "Nope, we can't do it, we haven't got the right tool."....

Does anyone remember Mutley from Wacky Races?

:-(((
