My Dad has a 97 R Passat diesel saloon,and the exhaust has just gone.He\'s been quoted £400 for a new system,not fitted.
Surely this is a tad expensive for an exhaust to buy and take away?
He lives in Gateshead,so if anyone knows of a cheaper deal than the above in the Tyneside area,then tell me where.

£400 does seem a little steep, but it depends for how much of the system this is. Back box, centre section or whole length? Also, where was this quote from? (VAG, kwik fit etc)
I have taken my 1993 Polo to a local Volkswagen specialist in Blyth, Northumberland, not too far away I hope (but I suppose it depends on the savings) They use genuine parts where available and can be really competative. Why don't you give them a ring and see what they say. It cost me less than £50 for a OEM back box, and that included fitting.

From the conversation I've had with my Dad,The exhaust is the original thats on the car,and is in one section,but it sounds like the cat has gone,and bits of it are inside the exhaust.
So he will have to cut the exhaust,fit a new cat,but at the same time,get all the old bits out.
If you could supply me with the specialists details,I will pass the information on.

Cost 2 years ago at independant VW specialist to replace cat (with VAG exchange unit obtained from local VAG dealer) was approx £360 inc vat. If the cat has broken up internally (loud rattling!), then it needs to replaced pretty quickly, because it will soon break into smaller pieces which will block the exhaust and limit speed to 30mph...
(The rest of the exhaust, at 7years, 148k miles, is still ok)

Try Euorparts. They are very good for VWs. For my Mercedes 230E I replaced the centre and back boxes for £130 + VAT. Buy the better quality system. They are German, very heavy and very well made.

I find that their service parts can be the same price or mildly better that Euro car parts. Plus, they can also fit it for you.
