When coasting i.e.in gear and foot off the gas the engine is jerky and as soon as I apply the accelerator its ok. its bit like a petrol engine when you are in to high a gear

Could be the idle stabilizer control. About £70 to replace - Audi garages only I'm told. I'm having a similar problem with my 2.0 petrol.

There is no idle speed control equipment as such on a diesel.

I would have thought there is somthing amiss in the fuel injection pump. I have experieinced this very symptom in my now departed 80TDi - the fuel pump failed some 40,000 miles later.
