Reconditioned gearboxes. - 20w50
some of you may have noticed ona previous thread I have had almighty problems with my Saxo gearbox becomming clunky, stiff and imprecise.
Ive decided im gonna cut my losses and get a reconditioned gearbox and a new clutch fitted.
Does anyone have any experience of Recon boxes they can share with me or can anyone recommend some good places to get tehm done?

I know a bloke in Coventry who does a great job for a decent price.

He did my 820VS PG1 box about 30k ago and it's still holding up great even after some hard driving (and these boxes are hardly bomb-proof to start with).

Are you certain you want to resort to this already? There is a question pending on the other thread about the quality of the replacement gear oil you used, and the effect that the cold weather may have on this.

But, it's your money, and only you know exactly how bad the 'box is now...

sorry missed taht, it was esso 75w90 so no question about the quality there.
Im tempted to out of frustration, the garage guy said the linkages were fine but maybe i should get them changed anyway cos im not convinced its working properly

I have had some experiances along the same line as you.

My L-plate 106 Rallye suffered a problem with the gear box.
It started to become clunky, stiff and inprecise and then I lost 5th on a long drive anlong a motorway.

By the time i got to where i was going I lost 3rd and reverse as well.

Well I checked the linkages and these were find, albeit a bit dry.

So the gear box was at fault, had to get it rebuilt at a local engineering firm near to me.

As to a recon gear-box I wouldn't go for that, I know that the repiar work would of been done to the box, but I would get the old one out of your saxo and get that reconditioned, as it would probably cost you the same amount.

My 106 box overhaul with me doing the donkey work cost £511 inc vat.

Remeber use some copper slip on the linkages, and regrease every time that you service it.

Don't know how much a recon Saxo box is but I got a good Escort one over the internet secondhand for £100 delivered to my mechanic. Afraid I've lost the link but lots of people here know it, a coalition of good quality northern breakers.

Agree there are plenty of 106/saxo gearboxes from low mileage crashed cars available with a guarantee for around £100...just not worth a recon gearbox on a car of that value imho

It's a website called something like findparts.co.uk. Google 'car parts' and have a look, you'll soon find it. You give the details of what you want and then some breakers (with luck) will email or telephone saying they have the part. You talk to them and say yea or nay. It worked for me.
