Wheel Balancing - Ford Focus - timp
I recently had two new front tyres (Pirelli P6000) fitted to my Focus. I am having problems with the steering wheel vibrating at 70mph. I took it back to get the wheels re-balanced and now it seems slightly better, but the problem remains.

Should I take it back to the same place again and try re-balancing them again, or should I try a different company and pay to get it done?

Thanks,
Tim

I have had similar problems recently when I had 2 new front tyres fitted .It took three visits to 3 different tyre specialists to overcome the problem. The last one did not charge and I observed the technican not use one of those power tools to remove the wheel nuts and he used an old fashioned spider tool. When i asked him about not using the power tool he said that he had not used one in 12 years. Have to say the wheels are now perfect. It may also be a bent track rod that is causing the problem.

I'm pretty sure it's the tyres that are the problem. I replaced them because of a puncture - the old ones were worn perfectly evenly and there was no vibration at all. I replaced them with Pirelli tyres because that's what the Focus is supplied with when new.

I had an MOT the following week at a Ford dealer and they didn't say anything was bent or damaged.

I might try a different fitter. I only had one choice when I spotted the puncture on a Sunday - no where else was open, and I wasn't impressed with them then.

The only parts of tyre to do with mot are tread damage/depth/bulges.sidewall damage ie splits or severe cracks but that depends on examiner.could well be a tyre problem.but could also be the wheel weights ie one has dropped off can happen.in which case try another place to get it done.if balancing won`t cure it.has to be a tyre? could be wrong?

Thanks for your replies. mech1 is correct - the weight(s) on one wheel have come off - I was wondering what the metallic clattering sound I heard a few days ago was! The weights were fitted on the inside of the rims, so it wasn't easy to check.

They are supposed to check other stuff around the wheel during the MOT. I once had a failure due to a split track rod end. If there is anyting wrong (which there doesn't appear to be in this case) then a good garage should notice.
