The nerve of some people ! ... - Ian (Cape Town)
Brilliant story from the local papers:
'A' and 'B' travel to a canoe race, driving their landrover. Having nobody to drive their LR from start to finish, they ask if somebody would be prepared to do it for them - this is a common occurence, apparently. Volunteer 'C' steps up, and says OK.
Unfortunately the good samaritan 'C' prangs said Landy.
A and B sue him for the R6000 (about 600 quid) excess...
Now, race organiser 'D' writes a letter to fellow canoeists, saying:
"if you are so disorganised that you come to a major race without a driver, you cannot expect to have Sarel van der Merwe waiting in the queue to drive your car."
If someone is kind enough to offer to drive for you, you need to accept that you have placed yourself at risk of something going wrong."
"So, if in future you arrive at a race without a driver, and you find it impossible to get a stranger to help out, thank the w*nker from Western Province who has stuffed it up for all the rest of us."
"In my opinion, the disservice to the paddling community comes in trying to get someone to pay for the privilege of doing a favour."

A and B are now suing 'D' claiming R20 000 [2000 quid] each in damages for the "w*nker" reference, and another R20 000 in damages each for implying that they were dishonest in trying to get 'C' to pay for the damaged car!

Ian, sure it wasn't Boetie van der Merwe?...
