Merc E-Class ABS Sensors problems?

Merc E-Class ABS Sensors problems? - pettaw
Has anybody heard of these failing causing the autoboxes to go into low gear and causing the back end to lock up? Friend of mine was doing 70mph on motorway when this happened and caused the car to slide out and hit the central reservation hard, and wrote the car off. Apparently MBUK have accepted 'partial liability' from what he tells me. The dealer who did the post-accident inspection said they've heard of this happening before. I think it was a 99T E-300td?
