omega gearbox bizare problem - multi
I have an Omega 3.0 Elite with 46K on the clock, The problem i have is the automatic gearbox.
When the engine and box are cold it runs fine with perfect barely noticeably gearchanges is very quick to respond to demand on changing gear. you can manually move the selector from D to 3,2,1 whilst driving slowly and it is smooth up or down, not to mention when going to pull away its is instantly responsive, Perfect until the engine and box warn up to between 90'C and fan kicking in. The gearbox is frequently harsh from 1st to 2nd and seems to slip abit from 2nd to 3rd. and sometimes whilst letting go of the accelerator its clunks into 3rd with a bang. The major problem is when waiting in traffic and going to pull away the gearbox judders/hesitates for half a second then is fine. I tried this in winter mode 3rd gear only and it judders for around 3 second before pulling fine, It also does this constantly whilst reversing when hot.
There is a pipe hanging down from the box that looks like a vacuum pipe but vauxhall say its a breather . I had the oil changed at vauxhall but i know they can only change around 40% no difference if not worse.
I just dont understand how it goes from perfect to crap just because of temperature even thought it has a oil cooler in the radiator.
I have had no fault lights at all for the transmission

any help would be much appriciated thanks

Further to my ealier message, does anyone know if transmission fluid overheating would cause the torque converter to hesitate and how do you know if your transmission fluid needs changing is there noticeable differences in the gearbox performance when the oil gets old and used?

thanks

Maybe the problem isnt the gearbox but the messages it receives from the ECU? On the other hand, the ECU warning light would show if that were a problem, my auto omega had a similar prob with the crankshaft sensor failing and then i found the gears changing wildly.
I guess there must be a temperature sensor in the autobox which I would think would show up a warning on the dash. My advice is to visit a transmission specialist and get them to test drive it. I've covered 101,000 miles on the same transmission fluid and I dont get the problems u mentioned, so I dont think the fluid is the problem. Does it do the same in sports mode? ALso do the revs show anything abnormal, this could cause the box to not change gear smoothly.

the box is the same in sports mode, i also descovered today that flooring it from stand still the car is so sluggish with no wheelspin, i cant get it to wheel spin at all with TC off.
i phoned a gearbox specialist and he said there could possibly be a the seals gone what ever that means but it looks like a replacement box at 1380+vat
thanks for your help
i am toying with getting rid of the car i just cant afford it no more

I have thye same problem with my omega 3.0 1999 auto, it been stood on the drive for a month now and when i start it it says "AUTOMATIC GEARBOX" Did u finf out what was wrong? many thanks

When the fluid warns up it becomes thinner. This can show up wear/faults in the valve body. I suggest you have valve body problems. A re-con box is probably the best route to go.

It sounds a bit like slipping torque converter, especially as it does this for 3 secs in snow mode, does it shudder a lot in snow mode if you try and accelerate hard?

It could be incorrect fluid (unlikely if Vauxhall replaced it) do you have the part no. on the invoice?

Low fluid will cause this (low pressure)

Sometimes there can be an internal leakage of line-pressure (seals)

Have you had any gearbox warnings? The codes may still be in history.

If he's got slipping and 'hammer shifts' then its not going to be the TC. Once slipping starts then friction material and fluid get burnt and you end up with a host of other problems. This isn't going to be a cheap repair...

I had exactly the same problem - turned out to be the crank sensor (the ECU courses all sorts of problems)
