Electric aerial unsticking - maz64
Hi

The aerial on my V-reg Accord sometimes sticks on the way down, so that it's left protruding. Is it OK to put a few drops of cycle oil on it, or should I do something else?

I'm all for giving it a try, but am also afraid of doing something stupid...

Cheers

DO NOT OIL IT

Oil or grease makes sure the dust and dirt stick nicely to the aerial and gum it up nicely

There is some graphite stuff that should be used, cant rmember what it is, just wanted to make sure you dont put oil on it.

Good job I asked! Thanks for the info; I'll see if Halfords have got some of that stuff at the weekend.

If you want the graphite stuff, why not just rub a pencil up and down the mast?

The other alternative are these sprays for pedal cycles which containg PTFE, I've used the one in the red can from Halfords (GT-85??) for this sort of stuff. Its in the cycle maintenance section.

If it is stuck, then personally I would oil it to free it. Something like wd-40 should do the trick, then wipe off the excess from the mast after upping and downing a few times. Then once every couple of weeks or so I would rewipe the mast with a wd-40 soaked rag to remove any grunge and to also give it a fresh application of oil.

Er, because the kids would laugh at me? No, you have a point.

OK- thanks for that as well; not sure whether to go for pencil/graphite or WD40 but I'm sure at least one will do the job.

Use the silicone based spray lubricant but do not spray directly. Slowly spray it into the lid of the can and apply it on a cloth every couple of days for a month then it will OK for the entire summer. If you are careful you can spray it down the individual section whist at different heights but protect the paint work. Regards Peter

I had a Mercedes 190E with an electric aerial on the rear wing. Regular lubrication with general purpose oil or even vaseline was the only thing that kept it retracting properly. True it does pick up more dirt but this can be wiped off when you next lubricate it.

Surely these things must bend slightly over time which is why they stick

I have a Peugeot 306 2.0 Convertible.I?ve also had problems with the electrc aerial. It seems to go up and down with no problems but it wouldn?t go down on the penultimate shaft. When I contacted Peugeot they would gladly sell me a new unit for £120+VAT.When I asked them for just the metal aerial shaft they said that they could not supply the shaft on its own! I managed to find a replacement aerial after calling up many different Peugeot specialist breakers for £35. After fitting the aerial I found that the new one was better but it had problem with the final shaft! I recognised the logo on the aerial and contacted the manufacturer Hirschmann. The aerial I have is a AUTA 6000 KE model there are many different versions of this aerial and Hirschmann aerials are fitted to quite a few cars. However Hirschmann Car Aerials are now dealt with by company called Signo Communications. They can be contacted on 01234 843509 www.signocom.co.uk They quoted £35 for a new shaft.I thought I?d try and open up both of them to salvage any parts so that I could rebuild one of them. What I found was that the shaft is a sealed unit with a nylon based tractor feed cable. What I did was to clean the cogs and tractor feed and regrease all moving parts with Dow Corning MS4 silicone grease. After a few weeks of use this seems to have done the trick. MS4 is mainly used in the aerospace industry. However you can check www.dowcorning.com for suppliers.

I see WD40 now has a label saying \"there is no silicon in this spray and there never has been\".
