Diesel Autos - Robin Webster
I'm keen to get a diesel auto as my next car - trouble is - I'm not sure if they're being produced by anyone. The only make I can locate having this spec is a 1995 Citroen Estate. Are there any others ? If not, is there just no call for them or is the combination of a diesel engine and an automatic gearbox just a bad mix ?

There should be plenty of autos about - VW and Audi certainly do them.
Auto is a very good idea for a modern turbo-diesel as it's easier to keep it at peak torque.
Older diesels might be a probelm as they were pretty much bargain basement motors a few years ago e.g. Escorts - Maestro Clubman (euch!) and I doubt anyone was paying an extra grand for an auto box back then even if it was available.

Hi Robin,
Rover 75 diesel auto is an absolute belter as is the Ciroen Xsara HDI 110 see HJs comments on this site.

If looking for a slightly older car the Astra 4 diesel auto was good car, discontinued now, but got excellent reviews and the auto box on the Xantia XUD 1.9TD was what that engine was just waiting for IMHO.

Older still and diesels and autos did not seem to mix, not sure why, maybe its now because the electronics on the engine and box can "talk" to each other, like to hear the engineer's opinions on that observation.

F's comments are quite correct, the auto box takes care of that area where the engine is sometimes a bit flat before it gets on boost.

Try a used Mercedes C220D or C250D. Auto option on both I believe. Should be good value now that the new model has come out

Or even an Audi A4 TDi Auto?
Stuart's quite right - the Rover 75 Diesel Auto is superb.

Autos are a bit rare on petrols also, as no-one want's to pay an extra £1000 or so, especially tight diesel drivers!
