2000 VW Polo Match 1.4 - ABS light - HMR

My Polo's ABS light is constantly on although the ABS works normally. THe local VW specialist suggested that it needed a new instrument binnacle which I had fitted at great expense. It made no difference. The light occasionally goes off for a while but most of the time it's on. Taking the ABS fuse out makes no difference. The car has done 56,000 miles and is in good condition otherwise. It won't pass its MOT, but I'm reluctant to scrap it. Any suggestions?

Any faults logged in the diagnostic system?Could be a wiring fault between the dash and the abs electronic module or the abs module itself.

A competent car electrical engineer is required to find the fault.

If it was me, I would test all the individual ABS modules at the wheels, test the ABS circuitry and the wiring of the warning light. (Obviously copies of wiring diagram needed).

I would expect that would take at least 2 hours work - The rate per hour is likely to be high as competent people are few and in demand. Prepare for bills of £150-£250 to find the fault.

I doubt the ABS is working normally if the ABS warning lamp is on. The brakes will work normally, and the car will be perfectly safe to drive, but the ABS function will be disabled.

Very few people will ever notice the ABS system anyway, unless you drive like Michael Schumacher. The only time you're likely to notice it is when you brake unusually hard on a wet or icy slippery road.

As you say though, the ABS warning lamp on is an MOT failure. I would find someone with VCDS to help you.

ABS pump modules are a common failure on VW's, and usually generate a fault code relating to the brake pressure sensor G201. They can be repaired, but most dealers will tell you a replacement is required at great expense. Shop around, and don't take for gospel what the dealer tells you.
