Toyota Avensis - Head Gasket - Unresolved Warranty Claim - Simy123

Dear John,

I have recently purchased a 2012 Toyota Avensis which has apparently had increasing smoking issues since 60000 miles. It had the EGR value changed at 60000 miles which then started leaking at 67000 and had to have the hose pipes replaced. Then the ECU was reprogrammed at 91000 due to excessive white smoke but this didn't cure the problem and the hrad gasket was found to have blown and had to be rebuilt at 98185 on 17/07/2014. By 28/08/2014, six weeks later the car had done 103406 and the smoke was worst than ever. A few weeks later the car was taken off the road at 104600.

Should the work carried out under warranty have identified the problem and rectified the problem? Does the Head rebuild at 98000 itself come with a warranty?

Toyotas warranty is 5 years or 100,000 miles thus the repairs carried out at 98,000 miles would have been covered (provided the car had been serviced in accordance with toyotas requirements of course).

Although the car is now out of warranty the work carried out at 98,185 miles should have its own gaurantee and any issues with that repair should still be sorted.

Any new problems identifed will not be covered.

Have you had this car from new? If not did you buy it from a Toyota dealer as an approved used car?Does the car have a full Toyota service history? Are you the person that had those repairs carried out? If the answer to these questions is no then you will not be covered by any warranty and are unlikely to get any goodwill repairs carried out by Toyota.

Repair work undertaken during a new car warranty, which this was, doesn't itself come with any additional warranty - regardless of manufacturer.

We don't have the full story here.

The head gasket was repaired at 98,000 miles when the car was within the new car warranty mileage limit. The then owner would have had the choice of taking out an extended warranty when the car was approaching the 100,000 mileage limit, but chose not to.

When problems arose at 103,406 miles, the then owner was told the car was outside warranty. The car wasn't repaired and was taken off the road by the then owner 1200 miles or so later. The car was eventually put through auction - where the present owner bought the car.
