cant decide between 328i and 330d - Eddy56

I test drove a 3 series recently on a bit of a whim and was so impressed I'm seriously considering buying one (at discount via a reputable broker). I drove and liked both the 330d and the 328i. But I can't decide between them on divring experience. I do around 10k miles per year, mostly motorway. I'd been told that BMW petrols have weaker resilduals but I wonder if that will change with the current climate on diesel bashing and also the move to a more economical 4 cyclinder turbo petrol over the older thirstier 6 cylinder petrols. I'm also not sure how things could change over the next couple of years on VED and fuel duty for diesel. I wondered if the petrol might be a safer bet. Any thoughts?

For your mileage I would go petrol. The saving on fuel with the diesel will be negligible compared to the price of the cars, the handling of the petrol will be better, the noise sweeter and quieter and there is clearly a move away from diesel from the politicians.

Try to second guess VED is tricky best go on what you know. Petrol is going to workout for you and maybe a welcome alternive when you come to sell for someone.

I'd be inclined to go for petrol too, despite your use being motorway based.

The tax situation is nigh on impossible to guess, either way there seems to be no shortage of buyers for used German prestige marques so it's not as if you're going to get stuck with a car the depreciation of which will break you, some people will always prefer one fuel over the other and are prepared to pay the costs involved, espcially if it's up the range which is where you are heading.

Enjoy whatever you choose.

the dealer I test drove the cars with said he couldnt remember the last time he sold a 328i, said he sold the odd 335 but otherwise it was still diesel, diesel, diesel. I guess that got me worried about trade in time and residuals. But I'm planning to get in m-sport trim with adaptive dampers which I thought might be the right sort of package to appeal to petrol buyers when I came to sell.

That's as much to do with BiK as anything else i would think, i wonder how many companies have a Diesel and hybrid policy only...thinking about it our company cars right up to MD level are one or the other, mind you the chairman has whatever takes his whismy and can't say i blame him.

Do you want M sport spec with presumably a harder ride and huge wheels?, if so by all means have it but i wouldn't be too sure that every used buyer will be thinking along the same lines, seems a shame to buy something you don't actually want purely to make it saleable to a possible market sector in due course, but if you want that spec its your money and only your choice and thats how it should be.

As for BMW sales bods, hope he's sharper than the one who told a chap i know, who happens to own half the village where he lives, to come back when he could afford one when he went in dressed in his normal casual/scruffy style...had super salesman looked at the number plate on the common or garden car he arrived in he'd have seen one relating to his profession worth around the price of a new 7 series.

I like the m-sport trim, that's why I chose it. The key was the adaptive suspension. the standard m-sport sprung 330d I tried was too firm for me, but the 328i tested with adaptive dampers was much better. Firm if you want to firm things up in sport you can, but in comfort it was a very nicely balanced ride and this from someone who is normally fussy about "sport" suspension and firm choppy riding cars. So the adaptive dampers swung it. The wheels are 18inch, not over the top big by today's standards, it rode very nicely. If adaptive dampers were not an option then I'd have been taking the option "delete m-sport suspension" or taking an SE with some extras.

I'd disagree about the noise - BMW's 6-pot diesel makes a lovely muted, throaty growl, whereas the 328i is just a fairly characterless 4-cylinder.

The problem is that the 3.0 diesel six is just such a lovely motor, generally acknowledged to be one of THE best diesels available in any car.

Makes choosing tricky, but it's a nice conundrum to be in!

They are lovely cars. I drove the xdrive version of the 330d, and found it very effective.

I'd buy the one you like driving the best and not worry about things that might or might not happen in five years time. I'd hate to be driving a car I didn't enjoy just because of some future possible saving. Really, if depreciation is a worry, I'd look to buy something older and cheaper.
