I've been having winter starting problems for the last couple of years. Initially it would start then stop after a few seconds and refuse to start again unless it was left for a few minutes. I took it into a diesel specialist last spring who replaced the crankshaft and camshaft sensors and it did seem to improve things, although it did happen on several occasions through the summer.

However, it has now become very difficult to even get it to fire. But when I eventually get it going it runs absolutely perfectly. However, the engine management light stays on for a while.

One thing that I have noticed, and I think that it's significant, is that when it is difficult to start it is parked on my drive with a very slight uphill gradient. If I park it the other way round it starts on the first turn of the key.

It seems to me, and I'm no expert, to be fuel related and I would be interested to hear from anyone with any thoughts on the problem.

First check : fuel filter (or possibly filters). They do get clogged up, so can restrict the amount of fuel getting to the engine.

In addition, most fuel filters should have one-way valves on them - but you'll tend to find that the cheap ebay specials don't. If they don't have one-way valves, then fuel can drain back to the tank overnight, making starting a much longer process in the mornings. The slope the car is parked on can make this more (or less) likely to be a problem.

Thanks RobLP.

Strangely enough when I last had it serviced two years ago and the fuel filter replaced it was ok for a while. And shortly before I though that I had picked up some dirty diesel.

So before doing anything else I'll get the filter changed.

If that doesn't do it check for air leaks in the fuel line, if you park it facing downhill it may show up as a diesel leak.

Sounds like it would benefit from a service and I'd suggest finding a reputable diesel specialist. They can check for air leaks in the fuel system and replace the fuel filter with a new OEM spec item.

Could also be glow plug related, though at the current overnight temperatures with a modern common rail diesel, I'd be surprised if it failed to fire with dodgy glow plugs. Might just run a little rough for a couple of seconds after the first start of the day.

Early days yet, but a new fuel filter housing may have fixed it, as it now starts on the first turn of the key. Time will tell.

Spoke too soon. Difficult starting back again, but only when parked on a slight uphill gradient. Parking it the other way facing very slightly downhill it always starts immediately. So if anyone has any ideas I'd be pleased to hear from them.

Could possibly be the lift pump in the tank? As someone said previously if the fuel is running back and the lift pump isn't working it won't prime so well so will take a while to start. Could well be an air leak, quite common on the peugeot diesels with the pipes the way they are.

Finally sorted, I'm glad to say. I removed the nearside headlight and disconnected all the loom plugs including the one to the ecu. That one had what looked to be beads of silicon gel on all the pins so I cleaned it up, reconnected everything and it fired up first time.

That was three months ago and it's started first time every time. So, after spending loads of money with so called diesel experts I fixed it myself. And I am, by no means, an expert.

I was pointed in the right direction by the manager of a fleet of x250's who has experienced many problems with the loom wiring in this area.

That's often the way. A couple of years back my power steering went heavy. "Oooh, that's a sign it needs a new power steering motor", "common fault on these Pugs" said the "experts".

One weekend I took off the wheel, wheel arch liner, disconnected the electrical connector, cleaned it with electrical contact cleaner, reattached and sealed it, and not a single problem since.
