Caution Steering rear axle - Red Red Robin
Dear Backroomers

I sometimes see the above as a warning notice on large lorries. Could somebody tell me what characteristics I should be looking out for.

When the vehicle turns, the rear wheels steer outwards slightly, so that the rear wheels follow approximately the same track as the front ones, rather than cutting off the corner.

The look out for rear wheel steering is that the rear will swing out wider than a normal trailer as the pivot point is moved forward.

The benefit for the user is reduced tyre wear due to the wheels steering the turn rather than scrubbing through the turn.

And he does not have to go so far out to make a sharp left turn.
