Peugeot 306 1.9TD 1999 - "Battery" Light Dim - WhereInSussex

This morning got in car and battery charging light on dim.

First thoughts were dodgy brushes or other alternator problem, light would go out at about 3000 RPM (but sometimes came back on).

When arrived at work switched off and then noticed light came on dim (rather than bright) when engine off and ignition in position I or II.

I had to give someone a jump start three days ago at the end of a journey and have done about 150 miles since without the light on. When connecting the jump leads I did notice some furring around the +ve terminal.

Any thoughts?

Could be the first signs of a failing alternator. Make sure all connections to it are clean and tight.Check charge rate voltage to establish if the alternator is actually putting out anything. If the light goes at at speed, then this could indicate brush or slip ring wear.

Had a similar problem on an Escort-turned out to be a bad connection on the alternator.

Also symptomatic of diode pack failure.

I'd clean up the battery connections and then check the charging first.

I would like to suggest the earth strap connection to the bodywork.....battery connections are given attention but the end of the earth strap has probably never been near a spanner since 1999 when the car was assembled.

If you gave someone a jump start and it has happened since then, I'd suggest it has spiked the alternator and damaged either the diode pack or regulator.

I had the same thing myself once.
