Hopefully this will end the extraction of cash from those that don't take care when getting a new tax disc, EHIC and the like

Five suspects in Blighty have been arrested during an investigation of copycat government websites that con folks out of money for items like new passports, driving tests and car tax discs.

The sites try to pass themselves off as official and then trick people into paying for services that the government actually provides more cheaply or even free of charge.

There are still plenty more "fake" websites and they are no doubt making a fortune from unwitting motorists:

https://www.drivinglicences.org.uk/Default.aspx

https://drivinglicenceapplications.org.uk/index.php

I find the first website particularly galling as those in charge cannot agree on the (British) spelling of licence (noun).

It would only take a couple of penstrokes to put these leeches out of business but there seems to be no political will to do so. I can name a few countries where anyone purporting to usurp the government and offer government services ends up in jail fairly rapidly.

The website :

www.drivinglicences.org.uk/Default.aspx

is pretty clear. At the very start, it says :

A similar checking service can be obtained from a Post Office at a reduced fee or you can apply without a checking service where there will be no checking fee payable. We are not affiliated with Post Office, DVLA or any government body.

In addition, on the front page in at least 2 other places they are very clear that they are not the official DVLA website.

If we're going to want that site (and others) closed down, then should we also close down the Post Office, as they provide a checking service and charge a fee for it ? Or do we just reinforce the Post Office monopoly ?

Both those websites do explicityly say that they are not the DVLA so probably won't be shut down
