Mondeo Zetec 2.0TDCI Duratorq 2010 - Acceleration problem or not? - 2010Mondeo

Hi,

Just recently purchased a 2010 Mondeo Zetec 2.0, 6 Speed with 130,000KM (80,000 Miles).

The problem if it is one happens when I accelerate from about 1800RPM up to 3000RPM and only happens if I put the accelerator down about 50% (so I am not flooring it but I am not going easy either).

What I see and hear is the engine rapidly rev up to 3000RPM and then drop back to 2500rpm and holds unless I provide different inputs (gear changes, accel etc). I feel like the car is accelerating and even when it drops back to 2500RPM i don't feel the car loosing speed.

Now if I do the same thing and floor the accelerator from the same starting 1800RPM, again the RPM rapidly approaches 3500-3800RPM, drops back to around 3200RPM then rises again to 3500-3800RPM and eventually quickly settles down.

I have tested the clutch and I haven't noticed the ESP light coming on. btw if I am accelerating more easily then the 2 examples above the RPM counter is is more even and there is decent acceleration. I have checked this with most of the high gears 4th and 5th.

I am confused as to wheter I actually have a problem (note I drove a 1.4petrol for 9 years before buying this car) and the only diesels I drove were TDI. Is this normal behaviour, is the car automatically adjusting something that affects the RPM.

Any ideas greatly appreciated, I still have 6months warranty.

Regards,

It sounds like the clutch is slipping under high load / maximum torque output.

You're sure that the engine revs build faster than the rate of forward acceleration?

Many years ago I had an Mk3 Escort with a slipping clutch, but it would ONLY slip under load in top gear. It passed the traditional clutch test on handbrake on and 2nd gear. I had to take the dealer salesman out with me and drive up a hill to demonstrate it.

If your description is correct then you have the begining of a slipping clutch it could be the friction plate that is worn or the pressure plate either way you will not know until the gearbox is removed and the parts examined.
