2.0 Mondeo tdci - Glow plug lights and white smoke - clemma

I have a 52 plate with 107000 on the clock and it has some problems. For starters the glow plug light constantly flashes...no amount of restarts makes it go away.

Seconly...it doesn't like cold starts. Once it does start it doesn't sound too bad although it is a tad lumpy. When idle it does kick out a little white smoke bit give it some revs and its like a fog machine. The car also cuts out under acceleration. Once the car warms up it still smokes but not as much. Gentle acceleration stops it cutting too.

A mechanic friend did a quick test on the injectors...while the engine was running he disconnected the injectors one at a time. 3 of them caused the engine to knock, the 4th made no difference to the engine at all. So, from that we have presumed its one faulty injector. Someone did put a diagnostic on it but got no codes back (since found out he didn't have the right machine for our car so feeling very ripped off).

So, although we haven't got any codes so we are certain it's an injector. We have also been told it may have just lost its code. Is this common? Is it worth trying this first? Or should we just replace the thing and be done with it?

The white smoke stinks of unburnt diesel. The turbo kicks in and works as it should.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
