A fair quantity of milk was spilled onto the carpet of my new VW Golf and despite mopping up as much as I could and cleaning with disinfectant, I've been left with that sour milk smell which is getting worse as the bad weather approaches.
Besides changing the carpet, does anyone have any advice to give with regard to curing the smell?

You might want to try putting some bicarbonate of soda down on it and leave for a few hours then hoover it up...

you need to lift the carpet to get to the wadding this will be saturated and ideally needs throwing away and replacing ,your carpet itself will clean up

A few years ago I knew a Sales Rep who was dismissed by his company - unfairly he maintained - and he had to hand back his almost new Ford Granada Estate which was his pride and joy. After discussions with his Car Dealer BiL he followed the BiL's advice which was to carefully pull back the carpet , pour one pint of full cream milk onto the wadding - allow to dry - replace carpet...............and return car.

A few weeks later he returned to the company to pick up his final expenses and was told by the secretary
" I don't know what you've done to the car but no one's been able to drive it without being sick!"

An old car dealers trick - when trading a car with someone who's had you over in the past according to the aformentioned BiL................makes the car unsellable!

Sounds like Oldmans learnt the remedy though !!!!

I've been using Groom upholstery cleaner for many years in the car & when the kids have made a habit of knocking over glasses of milk onto the living room carpet it has worked there as well after several applications to kill the bacteria. Might be worth a try before you rip out your carpets. Lots of Groom foam & some clean water, a cloth &/or a nail brush & lots of elbow grease required. www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product...2

Baby Wet-wipes are pretty good after that - Neutradol spray (or Oust or equivalents) to follow.

Former acquaintance did an emergency stop and hundreds of eggs broke in the back of the estate car - valeted......... 2 mths later he sold the car as the smell did not leave even after all endeavours.

Many years ago my family had a new Vauxhall Cresta. After a few weeks a horrible smell developed which could not initially be traced. Eventually the rear seat was lifted out and a large quantity of rotting milk was found.
My young brother then admitted he had spilt a bottle of milk on the - plastic - seat which had just run underneath with no trace after a quick wipe.
I don't think we ever entirely got rid of the smell before my sister totalled the car in a rollover accident 4 weeks after passing her test!

Did you also use a vacuum cleaner as part of your cleaning process?

My dad broke several dozen eggs in his Vauxhall Victor estate. We tried everything to get rid of the smell, but nothing worked. He had to sell the car in the end.
I have heard that milk is worse, so my advise is to sell the car!

I read somewhere that Vinegar might sort this out - try a search on google!

It stinks! You'll appreciate the open windows in the depths of winter ;-)

Remove and steam clean carpet. Throw away soundproofing. Wipe down floor pan with damp rag and floor cleaner. Wait until the stench has gone, fit new soundproofing, refit carpet.

I did this many years ago in the boot of my Honda CRX tried everything but the only way i could do it was to take out the carpet and clean it using a vax or similar several times then use a good air bacterial cleaner such as nutradol to get rid of any lingering odours

From HJ's column in today's Telegraph
I have a bad odour problem in my Toyota Avensis. Milk has been spilt in the boot and the unpleasantly pungent side-effects have worked their way into the cabin. I have tried using a spray upholstery cleaner, but in vain.

First use bicarbonate of soda to get rid of the bacteria, then leave open bowls of malt vinegar in the car and boot overnight. This may read like an old wives' tale (and may well be one) but apparently it gets rid of the smell.

Hopefully, this isn't advertising, and it's OK to the moderators.....

My company is developing/marketing what is a bio-remediation treatment, which is a microscopic organism which can clean up polluted water (we are a water utility contractor).

One of the things this product is good for is cleaning up milk odour - we found out by accident, when someone spilt a fair quantity of milk in their car - tried the product out, and it worked !

Try a search for Plas Qwilym Environmental - the web site is in development - but worth giving them a call - the stuff has loads of uses.

I only work for the group (Financial Controller) - it's good stuff, but very new, but we aren't sure of it's uses, we sell it in dried packets, so needs mixing up - will do some more investigating and see what's on offer - might get some to see if it works on oil on the drive ! It's main use is in cleaning ponds/lakes/rivers !!
