Nissan Almera Judder on hard braking - Hugo {P}
Having now got the Almera back, I noticed that the brakes judder when fairly hard braking is applied. I'm not talking emergency stop here but simple harsher than normal braking can cause this.

Wifey noticed this in the car before she picked an arguement with a wall in it. The car has been services a few months ago and she does very few miles. I would be surprised if she had done more than 1000 miles since its last service.

The car has ABS but there are no warning lights coming on.

Probably needs new discs. They are not dear on the Almera (about £20 each) and pads about £15 the pair.

Could also be pads just on/before limit. Some rovers suffered this. though its worth checking discs out as well.Had this on my 414i..Pads to blame though discs badly worn as well..replaced all/no problem after

TBH, for what it costs I would just change the lot and save messing about. Its a dead easy job on these Nissans too.

This place sell discs and pads and the quality and prices are good (Delphi parts):

buypartsby.co.uk

Or you can use Mintex parts from a local factor. I've always found Mintex to be good over many years.

I was told that leaving your foot on the brake after stopping can leave a heat related 'footprint' of the brake pad on the disc, especially if you've just braked quite hard or for a long period.
This can then gives the impression of warped discs / lumpy brakes.

Anyone else heard this or is it an old wives tale?

I've sort of heard something similar, although the version I heard was that the part of the disc clamped between the hot brake pads cools slower than the part exposed to air. This uneven cooling actually causes the disc to warp.

Dunno how true it is.

This is unlikely to occur unless sudden cooling ie going through puddles..In which case its a common occurance.Unless the none vented type disc. is badly worn which is common. Is used.

I think the car in question is an auto - the brakes tend to get a bit more wear than on manuals.

Spot on Aprilla - it is an Auto, and yes I suspect my mother was very hevy footed on the brake. She used to be with the Volvo 343 GL she had, and the escort mk4 after that, despite the fact that the escort was a manual.

Thanks for all the replies - it seems that the discs and pads are going to get changed soon then.
