Rover 416 Heater Controls!!!!!! - T-Bod
I have a Rover 416i (97 R) for my sins and the problem is the heating controls. The dial is numbered from 1 to 4 but it only works on 4 and i dont know why. I have tried to listen to the fan when the engine is off but nothing until number 4 and its annoying as i dont want the air blasting out all the time but it would be good if there was some air fanned out as this would help to keep the windscreen clear.

Any suggestions would be helpful (except get a new car!!!)

Thanks.

Sounds like the resistor pack has gone. The motor needs resistors to vary the speeds on 1,2 & 3 settings, but is directly wired on speed 4.

If its the resistor pack what do i do next?
Sorry i dont mean to sound a bit thick but not sure with electrics

You'll need to replace it. But quite where the pack is situated, I'm not sure - generally they're near the motor. Hopefully a Rover expert will be along anytime soon.

Take the glovebox out (Two 7mm bolts from memory!) and the resistor is to be found on top of the fan motor housing, in the airflow.

It has a clear plastic plug (4 pin) clicked into it.

Two cross-head screws secure it to the ducting.
A new one is JGH10003 or similar, priced at around £28

Deja vu.

I had exactly this problem and I'd advise that before you go and buy a new one for £30 or whatever, try your local scrap yard. I picked one up for my Astra (removed it myself which helped me to deal with my own car with less damage potential too) and it worked out at about £2. I think it helps if the scrapyard types aren't entirely sure what it is just by looking. If they knew that they were £30 new I reckon they'd have charged more.

Would this be the same for the Rover 420SDI Turbo, i have the exact same problem?

Thanks

Yes, Helz, it would be.

You can fix it yourself, all you'll need is a 7mm socket and a cross-head screwdriver. 15 mins and the job's a good 'un.

SWMBO's 1995 416i has similar problem, switch only works in positions 3 and 4. Fault appeared after car had been laid up for two weeks while we were on our holidogs.
Anyone care to advise whether the solution might be the same? Think I might go the scrapyard route if so.
cheers,
Ed.

My '96 416 went the same way.

I would be wary of using a scrapyard part as so many 400s are suffering this failure there's a good chance the one you get will either be duff or will fail soon. Most cars I've heard of are 95 to 98 vintage.

Perhaps a case where a new part makes more sense?

For the sake of £30, get a new one!

....You know it makes sense..

edisdead,
i fixed mine 2 weeks ago and it's still going strong,it cost £27 from a rover dealer but i would still buy one for that price rather than the scrappy as it should (touch wood) last!

I finally got round to doing this 15 minute job - it only took me 6 months! Mate of mine is a mechanic, just happened to have an ancient 214 in destined for the scrappy so we did a resistor pack swap. Perfect match, ours is good as new now.

Cheers for advice ppl.

Hello,

When the resistor pack on my ancient Escort failed, being the eternal tightwad that I am, I repaired it. It was just a broken connection inside - blob of solder and it's been fine for three years now...

Cheers,
Mark
