Are they mad ?
As if things weren't bad enough for them Ford have now paid BMW £6M for the Rover name.

I think it is aimed at protecting the Land Rover name so it is not cheapened when associated with cheap Chinese Rovers.

Good lord.... and the previous cars like the City Rover didn't cheapen the name?... would have thought that element was too late

Very good point -- I can't see how the Chinese cars could be any worse than Indian ones....

The original Rover Car Company developed the Land Rover in 1947-48, hence Land ROVER. So it is fitting that the names are once again to be re-united.

Ford is to sell Aston Martin and there have been rumours that they might sell Jaguar. If they do that they might want to use the Rover name for a future upmarket range derived from European Fords, as an alternative to Volvos.

Or alternatively, if they wanted to sell Land Rover, it would possibly add quite a bit of value if it came with the rights to the 'Rover' name too.

They have announced that they are not selling Jaguar.

Oh! I didn't know that.

Presumably Ford also owns the Daimler name that was owned by Jaguar (not to be confused with Daimler-Benz / Daimler-Chrysler etc.)

I would have thought that £6m was peanuts in this case.

Upmarket?

You ARE joking of course.

Rover as a brand name thoroughly devalued by the range of "quality "cars produced .. 200/400/800 etc..

Probably to use for a series of "limited edition" minis at some point just before they launch a new version.

Not quite. BMW kept hold of Triumph and Riley but the rest (Austin, Morris, Wolseley, Standard, Vanden-Plas etc) was passed to MG Rover, and is now owned by Nanjing.

Whatever Ford does with the Rover brand will take some doing, but I fear that whilst there may be a business synergy between Ford and Rover, that they will seriously struggle to improve the image.

VW did it with Skoda and that took many years. Ford does not have quite the same reputation as VW. Oh!, and Ford have quite enough problems.

At the moment, yes. But other successful names have been a joke in th past. e.g. VW - makers hopelessly outdated, bad-handling, uneconomical, slow but reliable aircooled beetles? Skoda? Renault - once makers of tinny rustbuckets with dubious styling. The Rover name could be 'in' again one day.

> Renault - once makers of tinny rustbuckets with dubious styling.

And now makers of unreliable plastic lumps with dubious styling!

There was nothing much wrong with the 200/400. The only weak-spot was the K-series engine, and you could get a Honda version for much of the run. Given the choice of a 216 or an Escort or mid-90s Astra, I know which one I'd rather have.

It was bad management that killed Rover, not necessarily the quality of their vehicles, which were no worse than PSA, Renault or Fiat.

And what do you you get if you pay peanuts?!
Ford owns Rover Name - jase1
So, BMW were going to sell the Rover name to the Chinese for £11m.

Then they sell it to Ford for half that amount.

Sounds like a stitch-up to me. Are these Eurobox manufacturers *that* terrified of the Chinese invasion?
Ford owns Rover Name - Red Baron
So, if and when the Chinese do present us with their cars, which would YOU buy?

A Eurobox or a Chinesebox.

In my experience, many of the cheap manufacturing sites are far from being paragons of quality and traceable manufacturing. It will be many years before I buy an out-right Chinese car.

No, no, BMW retained rights to the Rover brand name when they sold MG Rover, Ford always had an option on the Rover brand as part of the Land Rover deal, BMW could only have sold it elsewhere if Ford had decided not to take up the option, I presume the price was pre agreed as part of the option.

Ford have made it clear, they have taken on the Rover brand to protect Land Rover, there is little likelyhood of them doing anything else with it unless, at some distant future date, "Land Rover" becomes "Rover" to make Range Rover, Land Rover etc clearly identifiable sub brands.

>>And what do you you get if you pay peanuts?!>>

There have been several instances of big companies rebranding their log in recent years and commissioning firms to come up with ideas has cost them some remarkable amounts of money.

Rover, whatever some people may think, is still regarded by many motorists in the UK as an upmarket brand name. I know several 75 owners (some of whom have been Vectra/Mondeo/Laguna driving reps in the past) and all speak highly of their cars' interior styling and smooth ride.

i've got another theory..... Ford have deal whereby they can buy back Rover at a pre -determined price which equated to £6m........ knowing that the Chinese were willing to pay £11m to BMW

why not now sell to the chinese...... even if they only negotiate £10m, they still make a quick £4m

in the big scheme of things peanuts.... agreed. But £4m is £4m.

I know the BBC use generic images but they're getting more and more tenuous by the day!
