I have been taking an interest in this car, simply because it has a lot of interior space, it is cheap as a nearly new car, and it is available as an auto diesel.
Does anyone have any experience/opinions of it in auto diesel form?

As a nearly new, alot of car for the money. Even so, remember after three years, it will be worth only slightly more than a can of (supermarket non branded) cola.

Residual values don't bother me, as I tend to keep my cars over a long period. After all, I normally buy Citroens.

Which diesel, the 2.0 and 2.2 DTIs are very rough, the 1.9 CDti's are fine.

Seconded, don't touch the non common-rail 2.0 and 2.2 diesels, they are horrible !

What a stupid statement. Zafira 2.0 DTI bought last year cost me £13000, how much would a 1.9 CDTI Zafira cost me today about £17500, that,s a lot of money extra to pay for a " nice " engine. Is the extra 40/50 BHP/ Tq worth £4500, no, will it allow you to travel above NSL, 40 in a 30 zone without being caught, NO.
Horrible diesel engine that'll be Fords Endura, VX's 2.0DTI is a huge improvement.

I was saying this based upon my experience with the Saab 93 with the same 2.2 diesel unit and also having driven the Vectra 2.0 diesel. I suppose I agree that if cost saving is the issue over 'niceness' then fair enough.

Depends what you mean by "horrible"
I currently have a 2.2 Diesel Saab93 (100,000 miles), I had a 2.0 DTi Vectra before that (110,000 miles) after road testing a few cars I have ordered a new 1.9 Saab 93 diesel for delivery early next year.
The 1.9 engine is a really good engine and stands comparison with anything similar on the market today.
The two older engines were/are less refined and less powerful. However, I wouldn't describe either as horrible, they both gave more than adequate performance, acceleration and fuel economy and (in my case) both were pretty reliable, I had 1 engine problem with the 2.0 and the 2.2 has been 100% reliable.

I was thinking of 1.9 CDTi or even the 3.0 V6. I know the 1.9 is a Fiat unit but where is the 3.0 sourced from?
|
3.0 is probably Izusu, as part of GM. Renault use it as well, I think.
Not 100% sure though.

No comments on the auto gearbox so far. Is it 4 or 5 speed?
|
|
Yep, the same Isuzu 3.0 diesel unit is in the Safrane, Espace and the Saab 9-5. Very smooth, but only 25bhp more than the new 1.9CDTi unit (175 versus 150).

A fair bit more torquey, 370nm v 315nm though not specially so for it's size, a good spread of power and torque.

The new 1.9 cdti has an option of a 5 or 6 speed auto.
The 3.0 gets a 5 speeder auto option.
These are on the new cars.
Not sure what the options were from new.

If it's the same autobox as on my Vectra, then no complaints from me. Very smooth, and can left in either auto mode or put into tiptronic mode.

See vectra-c.com for advice and info. There's someone on there who can answer any query.

i have a signum 2.2dti automatic elite 04 reg..the car has been a pleasure to own and drive. 44 plus mpg around town, the car has never had a fault, has been cheap to service, i can park the car without the worry of it being marked ( as i have found on previous mercs, bmw & audi) the specification on the car is superb, with the rear seats folding flat it becomes an estate car. build quality is as good as previous merc and audi, being built at opel in germany. i would strongly advise you to buy one as it represents great value for money (this is important to a scotsman) ha ha.

If a scotsman says its value for money, get in there and buy one?
They(like all)like to see lots of car for little money!!

I am amazed you get such good economy from it. The best we could expect from the C5 we have is around 37 mpg combined (with a lot of short journeys though).
