HJ and mods, please indulge me, because this really does require pictures to believe.

What looks like a BMW 5 series leaving the road, hitting a fence, and being launched in to an upstairs bedroom.

At the end of the newsclip, they say that police will be trying to find out the speed the car was travelling at the time.

Is it reasonable to assume that in order to jump that far upwards, the driver must have been "making progress" to a considerable degree?

They're planning to fit a speed camera on an extra-long pole to catch airborne speeding motorists.

That should solve it.

Having watched the video clip, the BW has got his indicators on. A rare site indeed.

Wonder if he also had his landing lights on - or maybe it was the house owners fault for leaving their landing light on?

We'll have to see whether the police investigation leads to any charges being brought, and whether any charges result in a conviction.

But I wasn't entirely suprised to see that the BMW appears to have been driven by one of two men.

The Home Office has intersting figures on gender-breakdown of motoring offences: see Table 12 in www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs05/hosb0605.pdf

88% of those convicted for driving offences were male, and there is no category of offence listed in that table in which men accounted for less than 76% of those convicted by the courts. In that year, men accounted for 96% of dangerous driving convictions, 85% of careless driving convictions, 82% of speed limit offences, etc.

Of course, maybe these two men were driving entirely safely and just had some very bad luck ...

Since the driver was killed, one imagines it might be rather difficult to press charges.

Perhaps the driver was trying to emulate the likes of Johnny Kidd or Evel Knievel.

Do you mean Johnny Kidd, as in the Pirates or Eddie Kidd, as in a wheel chair.

I meant Eddie of course.
But I do remember Johnny as well ~ Please Don't Touch, entered the UK top 30 on 12th June 1959 and peaked at no. 26 for 3 weeks. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be!

I applaud the chap.

Obviously an aesthete he set out on a one man mission to destroy the architectural obscenity that is Basingstoke and wisely started with the ugliest house he could find.

His only mistake seems to have been his choice of vehicle - his rather flimsy 5 series clearly not being up to the job.

I may pop down there later with my sisters '84 Volvo 240 DL and carry on the good work.

I drove past this yesterday and could not believe my eyes. There are skid marks on the bend in the road which then cross over to the other side of the rroad, up and over the kerb, then across a large section of grass before going partly through a fence. By the way this section of road is a 40MPH limit with traffic lights just up the road from the accident. I estimate the car was doing in excess of 100MPH. Truly gobsmacking sight.

This is the quite frankly rediculous behaviour of drug-crazed or drunken un seat-belted car thieves which goes on every night. The government love them as it gives them another "Death or serious injury" and another "Accident where speed is a factor" for their graphs, which they can then use to punish people going to work, hospital, shopping etc....

I live on a 40mph trunk road, and 12am-2am most nights, (especially weekends) you will get cars going past at over 100mph which are obviously stolen and to which the rows of SPECS cameras are of no consequence at all. In the morning there is often evidence of demolished big trunk road lighting columns, flattened pedestrian railings and traffic lights, and a pile of gawdy celophane and cheap flowers and home made signs saying RIP DWAINE or a more simple WHY?

I suppose it would be in bad taste to leave your own home made sign stating 'Darwin strikes again'

How did you get them to install SPECS cameras? In our area, we have to make do with the inferior single-point types.

If a car has been taken without the owners consent, is a camera (specs or whatever) going to be much of a deterent? Wouldn't a traffic car be a better option..........

Agreed, not much use with stolen car, but SPECS cameras are very effective for the rest of them.
Wouldn't a traffic car be a better option..........

Cost of keeping a traffic car there all day? Astonomical (probably well in excess of £150,000pa)

Best to rely on the cameras most of the time, but send out a car to catch the thieves in the early hours, and have the car doing other traffic jobs by day.

The BMW driver must have been trying to serenade PoloGirl, who I think lives in Basingstoke, and who told us a tale a few months ago of how she had to mount the kerb for lack of available parking space.

Apparently a third man left the scene who is yet to be traced, and the police are looking for 5 sports cars also seen in the area at the time ...

You are correct.
I saw the item on today's BBC site and assumed it was new.
I did not check the date and just posted it.
I can only assume there was some sort of screw up at the BEEB cos it is not there now.
Perhaps it was the following item being set up?

Even so it's catching.

Ask Dario Franchetti, whose just done it for a second time in a week...:-)

I was lucky enough once to accompany Dario in his Mercedes SL600 at Elvington airport near York - he demonstrated just why he was driving for Mercedes in European Production Car races even at the age of about 21.
