I'll never know whether my eyesight was good enough - the examiner pointed to a bus in the car park outside the test centre and i knew it's number without even looking!
I must be one of very few people who have passed a test minus one L plate, too. Took the bike test the year before and when I noticed the back L plate had come unscrewed on the way to the centre and pointed it out to the examiner he said 'i'm not the police' and we started the test!
Had the same examiner both times, too...

I had brain fade at a roundabout and indicated left and went straight on or the other way round. I was incredibly nervous which made my driving appalling and definitely not decent enough to pass. Second time I thought I failed again as I felt the car was rolling on the handbrake after the emergency stop. It may have just been settling but I assumed I had failed again so pootled around quite happily as I thought I had nothing to lose by just getting on and getting back. Not an auspicious start!

It's strange what test nerves can do. It was an occassional sight to watch a pupil unlock the car and get in, open the door for the examiner and then after the briefing start looking frantically through their pockets, then on the dashboard and the floor for the keys.

It took varying amounts of time before the penny dropped and they climbed out and removed the keys from the doorlock where they had left them.

i failed first time on "undue hesitancy"

was asked to turn right out of a side road onto a main road with a high hill immediately to the right and cars flying over the top of the hill from right to left like it was a rally or something, i'd never come across such a suicidal situation before, and waited too long to pull out, afterward went back and didn't actually think my car had much chance of making it out if the timing was bad, typical case of very bad road design

A 1951 LHD Chevy. Chichester, February 1958. Age information is classified. Managed most of the course then it started snowing, so the examiner said we'd skip the emergency stop and go back into his office in the warm where he would ask me the 3 questions you had to answer in those days from the Highway Code.

Of the various tests I have taken since my favourite is the one I "took" in Oz for my "B" light truck licence (I had to drive on for my job and I only had a car licence). This was to be carried out by the local copper at Broome. "Local" in North-West Australia is a relative term, that meant a 200 km drive on largely red dirt road. I said to my boss "What I get done by the copper for driving on the wrong licence?"

"No worries mate. She'll be apples. How're you gonna get there if you don't drive there?"

Arriving at Derby police station I was greeted by an enormous sergeant.

"Drive that thing here, didgers?"

(Nervously) "Yes, Sergeant".

"Hit anything, didgers?" (walking round vehicle so if any of the red dust-covered dents looked new).

"No, Sergeant".

"She'll be right, mate, go inside and I'll get the missus to make you a cuppa tea while I type out yer licence".

I never passed a civilian driving test I took one while I was doing national service in the REME ( to the youngsters this is the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) around about middle of 1951. I was part of a small unit of REME bods attach to a artillery regiment. Before being licensed to drive we were given a course of lessons that included a Matchless 350 motor cycle, a open cab Morris truck with a Borfors light anti aircraft gun on the back of it, a large canvas covered truck, and a Scammell recovery truck that seemed as high as a house. The REME Captain in charge of us told us he thought all of us in the maintenance unit should have experience driving all of the types of vehicles in the regiment. After a few weeks of on and off training we were let loose with a driving license on the roads of Germany. Believe me in the army in those days they handed licenses out like throwing confetti in the wind. Having said that, after never being without a vehicle in the fifty odd years since I got my army license I have only had two driving offenses ( both for speeding in my younger days) and no insurance claims on my part for the last thirty odd years.Maybe they did teach me to drive properly.

Jan 1973 in a Mk1 Escort 1300. First test too, which amazed me. I was very nervous and wanted to pass very badly. About 2 minutes after we had set off into the traffic, sitting in a queue for some traffic lights the examiner told me to go straight over. 5 minutes later, when we actually got to the lights, for some unknown reason I turned right. I realised as soon as I started turning, apologised, he said don't worry carry on. That's it, I thought, test blown, so I relaxed and treated it like a lesson. If I hadn't had made that boo-boo, I may not have passed.

10 or 11 lessons, and no more than 250 miles practice (I chauffered my Dad everywhere for about 10 days before the test).

Had a brilliant instructor, who taught you to drive, not pass tests. This was his second job, as the first was the local vehicles examiner for the police!
What in and when did you pass your test? - machika
On the first two occasions I took my test, I was wracked with nerves and made a real hash of it. Basically, I did not like the car I was driving. It was an HB Viva with (to me) a really sharp clutch, so I never had any confidence in it.

When I eventually passed my test, in 1970, it was in an older HA Viva, which was a joy to drive. I had told my driving instructor that there was no point in taking my test again in the HB Viva and, after trying another HB Viva to try, which I also found horrible, I was given the HA version on the day of my test. With no confidence whatsoever, before I got in the car, I was delighted to find that it was a dream to drive and, subsequently, it made all the difference.

It was an experience that my first wife went through also. Eventually, after the despair of three failures, I advised her to ditch the driving school Marina, which she disliked, and take our NSU instead. I knew she was OK in that and, sure enough, she passed at the fourth attempt.

March 1989, driving school Nissan Micra, 2nd time round. Failed first time for undue hesitancy and something else.

Forget what the something else was, but remembered the undue hesitancy because that was unexpected, and completely out of character - at least so others seem to think. My wife used to say I was the only driver she knew who speeded up as I approached a roundabout.

For my US license it was 1987 in a 1979 Dodge Omni. Never had a formal lesson before and passed the test first time. The car was owned by my cousin and my only driving experience in it was the 20 minute drive to the test center.

That stellar performance was countered by failing my first attempt at my UK test. Year was 2003, car was a 2003 Ford Focus and I had 6 lessons before attempting the test. I think I might be the only driver in UK history to fail with no minors whatsoever. The very big major came about when I came up behind a line of cars that I thought were parked and attempted to go around them and through a red light they were stopped at!!.

I deserved that fail, but feel I have a valid excuse for such appaling driving 8-). It was a narrow two lane road, there was a truck right in front of me and a line of cars ahead of it. Coming up on a line of vehicles right up againt the curb with no brake lights on (being used to driving in the US and its majority of automatic cars means that cars stopped, but not parked, have their brake lights illuminated) I thought they were all parked. Having been warned by my instructor about possibly failing for hesitating too much, I did my mirror, signal then pulled around the truck. Examiner yelled stop, the car behind me moved up and I was left straddling both lanes until the light turned green.

I knew I had failed then, so the drive back to the examination center was a pretty easy one as I didn't have to worry about impressing the examiner anymore 8-)

Got the same examiner the second time but she said it was a very pleasant drive - still haven't worked out if she was taking the mick or not ;-)

I was 17 and learnt how to pass my test in my instructor's 2001 1.25 Fiesta but learnt how to drive in my Dad's 1999 Focus.

July 1964 and on a very, very hot day. I'd had eight driving lessons with an ex-police driver instructor in his Austin 1100 but, because I got the test date through very early, the 1100 was unavailable...:-(

So I eventually persuaded my then best mate to lend me his Mini Cooper (used for Rallycross and decidedly unhappy at 30mph in top gear) just for the test.

Despite the fact that it had sliding windows rather than manual winding and obvious other differences, I managed to pass first time after a quick half-hour spin in the Mini just prior to the test.

The worst part was driving back from the test through a busy town centre whilst on my own for the first time....

Failed first time on driving too close to parked cars and too close to the kerb on a very narrow country road. Not convinced that I deserved to fail for those but with sixteen minors (but not 3 in any one category, as it was then) I wasn't ready for the road.

Passed in my mother's F-reg Fiesta 950 Bonus Mk II (four speed box, no radio, 135 section tyres...) but my instructor had a Citroën ZX 1.9 diesel. Again, I was lucky in that my instructor taught more how to drive than simply to get through the test.

Passed second test 1957 in a driving school 4-speed gearbox Morris Minor which had nearly-bald tyres, a working semaphore type indicator one side, but just the remains (no arm, just a return spring hanging out of the slot!) on the other. (The latter wasn't relevant, however, because you had to use hand signals anyway.)

Failed first test a few months earlier after 12 lessons in a pristine driving school Ford Anglia (105E?). It had a 3-speed gearbox with a non-synchromesh bottom gear, but the instructor didn't show me how to double-declutch to get into first when on the move. Because the low torque of the engine would only allow a minimum speed of 20 mph in second, once I'd changed up into second my minimum speed was then 20 mph until after the next occasion that I came to a standstill! In those days there were very few stop signs at urban minor crossroads, and I was failed for driving too fast across them ~ see previous sentence for the reason for this!

Ok, I'll give you all a good laugh, now...I'll preface this with, it took three failures before I passed, in each case it was a Ford Focus 1.6. The first time it was for a multitude of things, I just wasn't ready. The third time was because of absolutely rubbish parallel parking (still can't do), while the second was the best reason to fail ever - I ran a red light.

It's not as bad as it sounds, the sun was shining on the green one and I only sort of noticed that...
What in and when did you pass your test? - patently
OK time to confess.

All three (yes, 3) tests were in the instructor's Mk II Escort at the tender age of 17.

First test, failed primarily because I skidded slightly (2 feet or so) at the end of the emergency stop. I had started learning in April, took the test in September, and had never been out on wet roads until the day of the test. So my technique was fine for the dry but not so for the wet! Other minor points also flagged up, but these were after the skid and I was a bit upset because I guessed what the result was going to be. I accept that I should have failed that one.

Second test, failed for "observations". Specifically, the examiner observed that I was a 17 year old male and decided to fail me.

Third test, after a 45 minute display of perfect driving :-D around all the local areas that my instructor knew were the hard spots where they took candidates they wanted to fail, I got the green form.

The result is that after all that work, I regard my licence as something I earned rather than something I had a right to be granted. Hence attitudes to drinking, Gatsos etc.

I'm a safe second time passer.

I passed on the 15th February 1985, 6 weeks before my 18th birsthday, in the instructor's Mazda 323. I remember that date well because a member of my family has a birthday then. My test was in the afternoon. Morning tests had been cancelled because of snow. IIRC I had two previous test dates cancelled for different reasons.

My first test in the instructor's previous Mazda 323 was a disaster, 4 majors ISTR. These included but were not limited to; passing too close to parked cars (yes I do believe the examiner was bricking it when I whizzed down the back streets of Truro), being too hesitant (how he worked that one out heaven only knows), roundabout procedure and something else.

I knew I had failed the first one so I just finished the experience and got back to the test station.

The second was OK until I got to the highway code questions. I had given the same answer for two roadsigns. The examiner then presented me with the previous sign that I had given the answer to and I managed to admit that I wasn't sure of the first one but realised what the spirit entailed. We then got on with the other qs and then he closed his book, paused and said "You'll be pleased to know you've passed.

I learned to drive in both the Mazda 323 (manual) and mother's Volvo 340 (Automatic). I used to drive to college once a week with a friend in the Volvo for some road experience that my instructor felt I was lacking.

Does anyone else in the Truro area remember Mr Bullen? I think that was his name. He was an excellent instructor.

I then passed my IAM test in September 1985 at the tender age of 18, driving that Volvo 340 again. Taking the test in an auto was not an issue to the IAM.

Passed 1st time, despite having an argument with the tester, and his subsequently looking for any excuse to fail me. As evidenced by his words as he passed me the form: Well Mr Leeson, somehow you've managed to pass.
Very nice.

The argument was to do with his choice of where I should practice an emergency stop. After warning me that it was coming up he told me off for only doing 25 in a 30 zone.
I personally felt that under the circumstances (urban estate road, cars parked on both sides, schools had just ended, so lots of kids about) 30 wasn't a suitable speed at that point, and I told him so.
I got a minor for that - 'not making suitable progress'

Not quite, but close. I took it in Congleton. I think the testers did cover a reasonable area though, so perhaps the same?
On the other hand, were you trying to describe my tester, teeth wouldn't have been your first choice.
He was somewhat ... portly, but to an extreme degree. He overflowed the passenger seat in a way which made use of the handbrake interesting, and also had an awkward habit of hooking his right knee around the gear-stick.
He was not a very nice man, and I know of several others who had run-ins with him.

He wasn't very overweight, just normal middle aged spread I think. Teeth were definitely being broken in for a horse. I took my test in Newcastle which isn't far south of Congleton. I am sure I have heard stories about your Mr Creosote too :-)

Same as Alan REME (Rough Engineering Made Easy) I passed my test during National Service in 1957 and they certainly did throw driving licenses around easily. At a transit camp at Worcester waiting to go abroad a few of us asked to go on a driving cadre to get a licence.
No problem, they sent us to an Army camp at Oswestry for a week and then gave us a test in the town itself on a 3 ton Bedford QL. A group of us sat in the back and were called up one by one by the Sergeant an old regular whose every other word was french ? (I think)?Five minutes and told me to stop and get in the back in short jerky movements (Army terminology meaning move smartly) and send another one. Bless him, he passed all of us.
I had been riding a motor cycle in the UK previous to being conscripted and never had a license but waiting in a transit camp in South Malaya nearly two years later to come home, the MT Sergeant offered me a motorbike test which consisted of a ride up and down the road in front of him on some old army bike. And gave me a piece of paper which granted a full license on return home. He probably got all his beer money this way.
And only a week before he had been accusing me of flogging petrol to the Chinese and demanded a cut in the takings to let me off?..

Passed in 1989, at first attempt, after a few months of lessons at BSM. Test car was a standard BSM Mini Metro.

I was in my late 20s by then, which may be why it turned out to be too late to teach me the fancier reverse parking maneouvres. No harm when it came to my test: the roads around the Norwood test centre were so clogged that we could find a corner to reverse around, so I managed to skip that bit.

First test passed in 1978 in a retired US police cruiser (a Plymouth Satellite, like those blue-and-whites in American movies from that era). A whale of a car with steering that was sloppier than a plate of spaghetti. The test consisted of driving out of the test centre car park, rounding the block, returning to the car park and parking the whale (nose first). Second test passed in a humble BSM Corsa in 1999.

Ok, Just to widen this bit.

That means I have been driving for 31 years. Say an average of 15000 miles a year means a total of 465,000 miles driven.

Say at an average speed of 40mph (probably too high) that means I have spent 11625 hours or 484 full 24 hour days behind the wheel. So thats over 1.3 years of the 31 since I passed my test has been spent driving the car.

Is my bum sore or what!

On top of that I must have consumed 60 tyres, and 15,500 gals of fosil fuel.

Passed 1st time, at the Isle of Wight test station 9th March 1992, in my Dad's 1982 Citroen Visa Super E (SDL 20X) - in which my elder sister had already been taught to drive, and passed 1st time, and my younger sister was also subsequently taught in and passed first time.

Went round the Coppins Bridge roundabout (a fiendish peice of road engineering with about 16 sets of traffic lights) in the first 5 minutes (after turning right at a set of non-working traffic lights!) and before emergency stop, so decided I was going to pass easily and relaxed - most candidates went round the roundabout on the way back to the test centre if the examiner thought they were good enough and going to pass....

The testers face was a picture when he saw my car for the test, there he stood all 6ft 3in tall, he had to squeeze into my mother's new bright red Triumph Spitfire (with a powerful 1300cc engine under the bonnet!!!!). After dropping into the car he found his knees were almost up to his chin and his clip board was almost too close for him to read. I cannot remember if the soft top was fitted or the hard top (we had both). I still remember being asked to to a three point turn in a road where the 21 foot turning circle meant I could have done a U-turn. I think he was glad to get back to the test centre at the end of the test so he could staighten up. Oh, you want to know if I passed - of course first time. This was about 1972 in Chatham in Kent. From the posts so far this seems to be the first test in a sports car.

Can you still choose your test centre?

In my day much research had to be done to find out which were the easiest and hardest centres to pass in. I seem to recall Isleworth and Teddington examiners and difficulty of test route were considered real pink fluffy dice while Weybridge was considered a real pushover.

It was the norm then to book your test centre of choice, and then book the lessons to fit in with your chosen location and date.

Hmm, forgot to say I took another car driving test in NSW, Australia in 1996, passed first time. It was in a Holden Barina in a small rural town that may or may not test the swear filter (coonabarabran). The road network was a grid system with no traffic lights or roundabouts and so few cars on the day of my test that we cruised around for some minutes looking for a couple of cars to do a reverse parallel park. Finally located a single car and the examiner asked me to park behind the car so I indicated left and drew alongside the car ready to reverse in behind. At this point the driver in said car simply drove off leaving me in reverse indicating left in the middle of the road. Examiner uttered something unrepeatable and asked me to take he back the the test centre.

As i said before i passed my test on the 3rd attempt, age 18 and 1 month...

1st test: made a pigs ear of everything at a junction. I was really scared of failing for undue hesitancy so i made sure i was clear on the right so i could turn left, and as i set off the level crossing on the right opened up and another car steamed up the hill. I was already pulling out, panicked, stalled, mounted the kerb. Its safe to say that I knew I'd failed then!

2nd test: Instructor had got a new car the day before the test so i wasnt that used to it... just so you all know. The examiner asked me to pull over to the left for something which i did... I indicated to set off again but the indicator didnt cancel and i didnt hear it as i wasnt used to the car... the examiner had to tell me to cancel it. I didnt think it was a mjor but apparently it was.

3rd test: Passed with 2 minors

Passed first time April 1989 aged 17 in BSM Metro in Wells Somerset.

Only passed on first attempt thanks to Dad taking me out every chance we could in Mums '84 Polo- and through hitting the kerb whilst pulling over to side of road in first 5 minutes- thought had failed after that so stress was taken away.

Also probably helped that back then the city ony had one roundabout I can think of- and not many more traffic lights.

Yes Isleworth was always rated that way. I took my tests there.
Turn up Wood Lane to be immediately confronted with a hill start at the level crossing. Brain working overtime, then before that manoeuvre could be attempted - Turn right here! Then to be then told to do a three point turn in a narrow road with a steep camber. Oh what fun!
However I passed after a grand total of thirteen hours total driving time and no practice on anything. I got a holiday relief tester from a rural location who was more interested in mud on the road. We got a lot of that in West London?
I really was not that good and was surprised to pass but a pass is a pass.

Passed my test, Ist time of course, in 1956 in a Ford Anglia provided by the Motoring School in Bromley, Kent.
I applied to take the test shortly after reaching my 17th Birthday and had 6 driving lessons with the then, Ron's School of Driving, in one their own cars (my family did not have a car). This included an assessment lesson I hasten to add.
The driving test day in Jan/Feb was snowy and most unpleasant but the test went ahead and I did my hill starts and 3 point turns on roads covered in compacted snow - Aahh, those days.

Motorbike passed first time without a lesson in West Whickam in Kent in late 60's - I can't even remember the bike I had but I believe it was a Yamaha 100 cc twin. I remember that the test route went past a school as all the pupils finished for the day and were wandering into the road with gay abandon as I was keeping my eyes peeled for the examiner to step out from behind a tree for the emergency stop.

Is there any truth in the story of the examiner who stepped out in front of the wrong bike and ended up in hospital?

Car test was in a Croydon traffic jam in a Marina belonging to my instructor Mrs James who also taught SWMBO in early 1970's - I had ten lessons which IIRC were £1 each ...

I too had the added complication of the examiner being also examined by an examiner in the back seat. I don't normally get nervous but every time I looked in the mirror the guy in the back seat crouched down so as not to be accused of spoiling my view.I stalled the car when turning right but recovered correctly and when returning to the test centre tried to drive straight into a space that was too small and had to come out and reverse back - but I still passed first time.

Is there any better feeling ( with your clothes on ! )than that first unaccompanied drive ?

Superb thread.

November 1969 in a green 2-door Morris 1100. This was the driving school car and was fitted with a plastic deflector (Galemaster?) round the driver's window so that the chain-smoking instructor's fag ash would blow out of the car. You couldn't tell whether the window was open or not and I nearly left the road after painfully trying to give a hand signal through the closed window.

Test passed without incident except for skidding on some autumn leaves during the emergency stop and kerbing the near side front tyre.

1981 at the age of 17 and 2 months. Passed first time in the Driving School Fiesta 1.1L. I practiced extensively in my Dad's Austin Maxi which, at 18 months old, had lost synchromesh on 2nd and 3rd gears. As a result of this the examiner remarked that I was the first candidate he'd seen in 15 years who could double declutch, which I'd had to learn as it was the only way of changing gear in the Maxi.

I remember how light and agile the Fiesta felt compared to the Maxi and how precise the steering, gearbox and pedals were. BL incidentally refused any contribution towards replacing the gearbox as they claimed all Maxis were like that.

As an aside, in the same year a friend of mine passed his driving test a week after his 17th birthday in his brother's Vauxhall Shove-it having not had a single driving lesson. I guess this is probably not possible these days.

It was a very windy and icey day, so on my Dad's advice I weighted the front of the car down with a hundredweight of King Edward spuds prior to the test. It did the trick, especially when the snow came three quarters of the way through the test.
The examiner seemed kenn to get the whole over and done with pretty quickly. I'm not sure if it was the weather or the smell of spuds drifting through the cabin vents that hurried him along!

I passed at the second attempt in late Summer 1987 at Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

I was driving my instructor's brown Nissan Micra.

My elation at passing was tempered by the fact that I had developed a huge crush on my gorgeous blonde female instructor, and success meant i would not be seeing her again. God knows how I managed to concentrate on my driving while constantly being distracted by her short skirts and skimpy tops.

Looking back, I'm sure she made the most of her looks to gain customers, and i certainly recommended her to all my mates.

The story goes that her first instructor through a national training company, who was, ahem, not suitable for lady pupils, got complained about by her. She was immediately given another instructor who was excellent.

Last as usual. In 1967, Cortina 1500. 1968: Yamaha YG1 (all 80cc of disc valve 2-stroke) - two emergency stops, the first for real when confronted with a van on wrong side of road. In those days much of the bike test was out of sight, or it was in Washwood Heath, B'ham.

August 1993 - AA driving school VW Polo 1.3. Even for some reason remember the reg no - K197 FRP. Basic, but reasonably effective bit of machinery, and almost impossible to stall thanks to good engine torque and a 1st gear in which you could manage about 18 mph flat out.

Second time round for me - examiner on first test invited me to do my emergency stop whilst descending a very steep hill, I hadn't practised doing them downhill and thus locked all four wheels and skidded thus for about 20 feet. Awhoops. I'm surprised we bothered completing the test after that, but hey! it was good practice.

March 1992 in a gold coloured Micra. Passed second time, failed first test on parallel parking & undue hesitency. To be honest though, I felt so bad at messing up the parking bit (only 5 mins into the test) I lost my nerve by then, started crying and froze when having to turn right from a pretty quiet road onto a very busy main road.

To this day I am still useless at parallel parking - fortunately it didnt come up on the second test!!

Ahhhhh! AA Driving School Polo 1.3's. Passed my own test (first time) in one in July 1994.

I well remember that legendary torque leading to flustered nerves whenever I would stall my mum's Rover Metro, practising between lessons. I remember 'my' car was brand-new - a girl I went to school with had wrapped the instructor's previous one (which had also been new!) round a bus a few weeks before...

August 2001, Vauxhall Corsa in Stirling, 2nd attempt although I got the pass certificate after the 1st time. I got a phone call within the hour saying the examiner didn't count the minors correctly (failed by 1 too many). Complained bitterly about it and got a free retest (only a couple of minors this time)

That will be in a Rover 100 (might have still been called a Metro back then) in July 1990 at the tender age of 17 years, 4 months.
