HELP!!

Diesel Estate car!

Sometimes i can drive for 3 days in a row with no probs, other times i can drive for 3 days then all of a sudden it loses power, dies & wont start again. Some days i can drive 3 miles and it suddenly dies! Usually when this happens if i leave it 10-15 mins it will start again! Its so unpredictable! There is no warning, no noise, no juddering, nothing!

The coiled wire light flashes too!

Ive had it tested on the machine but no codes are showing!?

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!

For faultcodes to be stored, there must be power to that module. No faultcodes = no power. The only time you get no (electrical) power that suddenly is if the connection goes. You probably have a loose electrical connection somewhere.

It's got all the trademarks of the usual cam-sensor fault - except the lack of codes.

If the ECU fault light was flashing, there should have been a code and freeze-frame data stored - who read it and with what?

Hi thanks for the quick reply.

actually what i didnt say was that the 3rd time it happened it wouldnt start after the usual 10 mins or so, called the AA out who did find a fault code P1000 and possible suspected code P1664. He towed me to my local mechanic who is a Ford specialist. When we arrived we turned the ignition & hey presto it started again!

The car was put onto the machine but no codes found. He kept it days and ran around in it but it never cut out! In the end He replaced the fuel pump sensor as this P1664 was the code for this.

I picked the car up & 4 miles down the road it died! Obviously not the fuel pump sensor!

The car stood over Christmas because i didnt want to risk going to work in it or taking the kids out in it & we were told that it was more than likely the fuel pump needed replacing but we didnt have the money.

eventually we found another garage (my dads mate) who would have a look at it, check the codes on machine etc. Again no codes found. They ran it around for days and again it never died so i collected it again. Drove about 25 miles and it died, started again after 5 mins. Travelled 3 days in it with n o probs, then died again, started after 15 mins, drove 3 miles died again, started after 5 mins. Drove 3 miles again, started after 15 mins. then drove 16 miles with no probs!

C why i need help? And i cant afford to go directly to ford!

When does it cut out - at idle or at speed? What's a fuel pump sensor?

Finding P1000 means that the memory was just wiped - with all codes and learned values erased??
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - wooliewoo
Hi

both! mostly at speed between 25-50mph, but twice when idle after being at speed.

erm...... fuel pump sensor? i dont know, thats what i was told he'd replaced at a cost of nearly £300.

Now if the AA guy had wiped the codes that time, its died more times since so wouldn't the code appear after each time?

ive just been told the fuel pump sensor is the fuel rail pressure sensor?

If there really are no codes; then I'd be thinking of the engine control relay - long shot, as I've never changed one, but....

thanks for your help, at least now we've got a couple of things to look at.

someone has also suggested we check the power supply to the fuel solenoid, do you think that might be a possibility?

do any of these jobs need to be done on the machine afterwards for settings and stuff?
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - Screwloose

Fuel solenoid??
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - wooliewoo
selonoid? solenoid? .............its just whats been suggested, ive no idea about cars or what the parts are or arnt, im just trying my best to get answers cos as yet no mechanic has been able to sort it and all seem to be baffled!
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - Screwloose

There are solenoids - some concern fuel; but that's not a precise enough description to identify any particular one.
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - wooliewoo
ok, so it wouldnt be an easy job to 'check the power supply to the fuel selonoids' as i was told.?

im just trying to eliminate as many possibilities and identify as many possibilities!

thanks alot, youve been a great help! any other suggestions please let me know cos i'll keep popping on and updating as we investigate.

cheers

The person who told you that was probably thinking of a diesel Sierra's stop solenoid - the world has changed.

The crank sensor could be added to your list of checks too.
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - wooliewoo
so on my list so far ive got

camshaft sensor
engine control relay
crank sensor

well that should keep me (or should i say my dad ) going for a bit

fingers crossed we find the cure.

on that note i love the car, but at the moment i cant wait to get it fixed and get rid, especially after ready all the stuff on the site.

Hi

Just an update..........

The camshaft sensor was replaced yesterday, and for the 1st time in a week i've managed to get to work without the car cutting out! Fingers crossed problem sorted! But not quite holding my breath yet.........
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - wooliewoo
2 weeks on and all working great!

It's actually got its 'kick' back too! It's like having a new car all over again!

One thing i still cant get my head around though is that it died so many times but yet no fault codes were ever found other than the one the AA guy found. Could this be something i need to look into? Incase i have any other problems in the future and the codes for those dont show either.

Cheers

I'm no expert, but there are two main methods of diagnosing faults in modern car fuel systems as I understand it. One is to read fault codes, and the other is to observe the "live" data - that is what the ECU and its various sensors are "seeing" with the engine running, and what data is being passed between them. Fault codes are only logged when a sensor or connection either dies completely, or returns something completely outside normal operating range. There is still tolerance on this however - something might not be returning the right reading to make the engine run properly, but could still be within its range of acceptable parameters - no fault code logged. I've known loads of cars of all makes with engine management issues that don't log codes and have only been fixed by "live" data analysis.

The "live" data route is much more informative, but requires much more expensive equipment, and more importantly a sound technical understanding of the system you are working with. For example, how else can the technician know that what they are looking at is normal?

hi, i have the same problem on my 2.0 tddi and have been told it is the FORD MONDEO III DIESEL ELECTIC PUMP, when it splutters and then dies we have to go underneath and hit it with a hammer, this gets us going again and gets us home. obviously it is going into the garage to be replaced but not ford who wrongly diognosed this and was going to charge 1500 to replace parts that where fine,
check the DIESEL ELECTIC PUMP.
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - Screwloose

Only some of the TDDi units [the D6BA engines] actually have that fuel transfer pump - none of the TDCi's do. The ones without it use the high-pressure pump to suck diesel in.

Hope this helps someone, fixed mine with new Eletric Lift Pump Bosch part no. 0580464096
went to Bosch dealer direct www.bosch.co.uk/content/language2/html/index.htm and got it for less than £100. My local ford wanted £454 (part only) for the same part.
This was a fix for my TDDI.

hi all,

I have a 53 plate ( Feb 04) TDCi 2.0 130PS Mondeo. bought it about 11months ago from Arnold Clark. good runner; did about 13000miles within 7 months without any major probs until a clanking sound appeared just when the clutch was depressed. took it in for service at a local Arnold clark/ford garage and was diagnosed with the dual mass flywheel problem. luckily I had the extended warranty with Arnold and the DMF was changed (took the opportunity to just as well change the clutch - same labour and all). wasn't too bad until about 1 month after the service when it cut out on the fastlane of the motorway on my way to work after a 40 minute snarl up. glow plug was flashing; the car just suddenly lost power and went off (we were crawling at the time)after 2 successive hard shoulder stops 3-5mins apart, I called the AA who arrived promptly after 30mins and did an ECU diagnostic. fault code - P1000 - more driving required to allow fault to develop! At this time, the engine started perfectly and I actually drove on to work. no probs for a month, then suddenly 3 cutouts in 3 days after 30min plus of slow moving traffic. almost didn't get home today. the AA guy said there might have been a connection that came loose during the DMF refit, and I have also been advised by others to get the injectors reprogrammed. someone please help!
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - paulontour
This happened to me after I had the dual mass flywheel changed. It turned out to be the crank sensor that reads off the flywheel. The sensor is magnetic and it attracted all the debris from the failed flywheel and it sends erratic readings to the ECU. Remove the sensor clean it and replace and all should be well

thanks for the speedy reply! any ideas of how much it will cost and time? took a good 3 days for the garage to replace the DMF the last time - issues with sourcing spares and a good 1.5days of labour or so I was told.also, would this be covered under the extended warranty?
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - paulontour
To clean the crank sensor takes no more than an hour. It is located under the the large hose connecting the air flow meter and the air inlet at the rear of the engine. It is attached by a 10mm bolt. It is awkward to get to but otherwise a straight forward repair.
Also did you having problems starting the car because the debri from the failed DMF will clog the starter motor and stop it engaging. If so then cleaning the crank sensor will no doubt solve your problem and will also eliminate the glow plug light from coming on.

i have a mondeo mk3 2.0 tdci the fuel ecu is damaged, have found another ecu,but two off the numbers are different, mine is,3s7q-9f954-aa the other one is 2s7q-9f954-ea will this ecu ework in my car

The presence of P1000 is significant; it only appears after the ECU has been wiped. Unless the AA man made a mess of reading the codes and wiped it by accident, then it would suggest a power loss to the ECU - maybe a relay or connexion fault.

These can have crank sensor issues after a DMF change; but the symptoms are not typical.
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - mugikuyu

would the fault codes be present while the car is driving normally?i.e. if I took it for an ECU diagnostic like now without the glowplug light flashing, would anything show?
03 2.0 TDCI dies then restarts 10mins later - Screwloose

Not all codes will flash the light; most codes on these will be Ford-specific ones and may not show on cheap scanners.

Loss of feed to ECUs rarely sets codes.

took the car to my local ford garage for an ECU check; nothing showed up. I was told they even tried to do a manual check just to make sure everything was wired up properly since they are the ones who replaced the DMF. they were reluctant to do anything else including changing/cleaning the crank and/or cam sensor as they have apparently never encountered they problem (I mentioned the DMF shavings being attracted by the magnetic sensor and that drew a blank as well). car has cut out twice since - It seems to be heat related as it only happens after about 40mins-1h of driving and then in a jam/start - stop situation. can anyone please recommend another more knowledgable garage in Glasgow? I'm quite desperate!

I too had the cutting out problem with my MK111 Mondeo, went to ford who said there was no problem so i went to a auto electrician who said it may be the fuel injector pump, which could cost upto £800 but to first to check the fuel filters and esure a steady flow is coming through

I brought a crank sensor but never put it on as it went a while without cutting out.there seems to be a lot of people with this problem, i wonderhow much Ford knew about this and ignored it

As an AA patrol I just thought I'd add to this discussion as having just gone out to one of these!! Exact same symptoms, member been having the cutting out over last week or so, glow plug light flashing, often restarts after a few mins (sadly not this time!) Did the usual things with our diognostics, Good signal from crank sensor, fuel pressure at the rail of approx 270bar for a split second then dropped to about 20bar, fault codes P1000+ (+ indicating happend very recently) and P1664 Injection pump control module malfunction! I got caught out on intank fuel pump as they use same harness for other vehicles with in tank pump ie 2 thin wires and 2 thick wires. This model doesn't have in tank pump!

Cure.......... I put new Cam sensor in, started like a dream!!! £22.79!!

Hope it helps someone!
