Why won't my diesel Zafira start?

My 53 reg 2.0 DTi Vauxhall Zafira won't always start, unless you repeatedly try. But until the light on the dashboard with the little car and spanner appears then it will start. Any ideas?

I would guess that you are having to wait for the glow plugs to heat up before the engine will fire.
