Is My Tyre Repair Safe/Permanent?

I've just had a tyre repair at a local (but sizable) MoT & Tyre Centre. I had a slow puncture caused by a nail. The nail was on the edge of the limit of where an inner plug-and-patch can be used so an external red sticky strip was inserted with a large needle like device and trimmed. What is concerning me is that some web sites are saying that this is only a temporary fix. Is this right? Some websites say it lasts as long as the tyre.

Surely a garage cannot just patch the tyre up and send me on my way with a temporary fix and not say anything?

My rear tyres have a good 5mm tread left so potentially will be on the car for some time...

What you need to do is get a gauge and check the pressure of that particular tyre every morning. If you notice a drop in pressure, then replace the tyre. The TPMS should warn you anyway, but better to pre-check yourself.
