What are my rights after owning a car for 9 months?

I bought a car (09 plate 1.4 Vauxhall Astra) advertised through Auto Trader in November last year. In May/June I went to a trusted garage after noticing I seemed to be constantly topping up oil, assuming a leak. I took it in after the light came on and there wasn't a drop of oil in it, so I had a valve replaced and 3 litres of oil put in. I then heard a rattle and my oil light came on. I took it back to the garage the next day and I hadn't a drop of oil in my engine and the rattle indicated that the cam chain was knackered. I've been told the price of fixing it is more than what the car is worth. It looks like the oil sensor was recently replaced, but not in the time of me having it, and there is no note of it. Now, I have looked back through the paperwork and the original add to find on his hand written receipt he declared it as sold as seen yet it wasn't sold as seen. Could it be possible that he knew of the fault and wanted to get rid quick? He had dropped the price from £2850 to £2500. And is it a case of it was too good of an offer and I've been done or do I have any rights.

You would have to prove that because unfortunately now it's considerably more than 6 months since you bought the car. See: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/
