Volkswagen Passat or Peugeot 406?

I need a new motor on a budget. I've found a 2-litre petrol Peugeot 406, 1997 R-reg with 77,000 genuine miles. The seller has every MoT since new, it's very clean and tidy inside and out and MoT'd 'til February 2011, and taxed 'til the end of July. He will accept just over £500 but the cam belt has never been changed. That is the only down side to it.

I've also found a 1.8 20v Volkswagen Passat SE, petrol, 1997 R-reg with 111,000 miles, 12 months' Mot, and four months' tax. The ad doesn't mention service history, but the car looks very tidy and the cam belt was done at 70,000 miles. It's up for £700. I don't know which one to go for.

Ultimately, looks aren't that important to me. I just want a reliable, economical car that doesn't break the bank when the discs and pads need changing (for example). Any help and advice would be greatfully received.

Overall, the Passat is a more reliable choice than the Peugeot 406, but as the 406 has fewer miles and a decent history, we'd give that strong consideration. However the cam belt will need attention soon, so take that into account.
