SEAT Leon - engine warning light is on

The engine management light showed up on my 2004 SEAT Leon 1.6 petrol the other day. The engine has been fluctuating between 700rpm to 1000rpm at idling, but this is not a regular phenomenon as it happens only when the engine is heated and not otherwise.

Car has run 91,000 miles and is due for a service. Can you help with this problem?

Might be nothing more than the a/c pump requiring a bit more engine power than it would get at 700rpm.
