Should I inform my insurers of a minor accident in a car park?

While parked in a supermarket car park my car was run into by another car reversing out of a parking space. The woman driver apologised, admitted liability and offered to pay my repair costs rather than put it through the insurance channels. At the time the damage appeared to be superficial but a detailed examination showed structural damage and a repair estimate of nearly £800. In view of the sum involved she might wish to put it through her insurers after all. Am I obligated to tell my insurers if I am not involving them, even if she pays me directly? I have been told that should I be unlucky enough to have an accident in which this repair is judged to be unsound then my insurance could be invalidated, leaving me with some serious problems. However, in this instance I am assured that the repair work will be guaranteed to a standard that would pass any inspection. What do you advise I should do, as personally I would rather not go through the hassle of an insurance claim?

Yes. Inform your insurers immediately. The way this seems to be going they will hear about it from the woman’s insurers and then penalise you for not reporting it. You will probably suffer an increase in premium from being involved even in a no fault crash.
