Can you recommend a small 4x4 or crossover to replace our Volvo V50?

We currently own a Volvo V50 automatic and are keen to change shortly for a smaller 4x4 car. We have always had good reliability with Volvos, with good safety features and comfort. Can you recommend a suitable smaller car to replace the Volvo?

Depends what you're planning to use it for and how small you were thinking. The FIAT Panda 4x4, Daihatsu Terios and Suzuki Jimny are about as small as it gets. The FIAT is the best out of the three if you're only planning on occasional and light 4x4 use. There may be problems getting hold of a new Terios, as imports have been suspended because of the £/yen exchange rate. The Jimny is the most competent off-road out of the three, but is outdated, noisy and cramped on-road.

Go up to the next size and there's a wide spread. Three of the best are the Hyundai ix35, Ford Kuga and Nissan Qashqai - so-called 'crossovers'. These are a mix between an off-roader, estate and coupe and come with two or four-wheel drive. Running costs are reasonable too. I'd recommend one of these: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/nissan/qashqai-2007 www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ford/kuga-2008 www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/hyundai/ix35-2009

In an earlier email, looking for a replacement for my Volvo automatic, I asked you to recommend a small, reliable, comfortable and safe 4x4, but forgot to mention that it has to be an automatic.
